CPU Questions regarding 32 and 64 bit and whats good to get.

Well currently im using a Athlon XP 3000+ I have been thinking about upgrading my vid card. But since my mobo only supports agp at the moment I thought I would buy a mobo that has pci-express but that would also mean I would need to get a new processor.

Since I don't want to spend too much money on a processor right now I was think of just getting a cheap one off of newegg, but after looking around I just ended up with more questions.

I have a AXP 3000+ right now would there be any noticeable speed difference if I replaced it with a AMD Sempron 64 3400+ Manila(well other then the "400mhz" difference which prob wont be noticable). Would I have to upgrade to a 64bit version of windows in other to take full advantage of the processor or would the difference be so small that I should just keep my OS 32bit be able to use my current software..

Also are there any cpus I should stay away from? Like specific types like Sempron or Celeron or even the different core types(I am guessing thats where the Manila fits in)

I am on a budget so I don't want to get some crazy fast cpu yet. But I do want to get a mobo that I can hold on to for a good awhile. So the socket type is a little important as well.

bits are a technical term for processes/second. 32bit processors can do 32 processes in one second. 64 bit can do 64 processes in one second. 64 bits are the new "in" for processors. they improve performance and overall quality of the computer in the fullest terms.

Well you might want to think about a Pentium 4 maybe, or D? If you want to run your current software you should get a 32bit processor but if you want to get the *in* 64bit processor you can but they still haven't completely switched yet . (in 2009 Vista... will run 64bit only)

on new egg it says "64 bit Support: Yes" would the 32bit version of winxp will run ok without problems?

First off thats only speculation, Secondly im pretty sure the Core 2 Duo's are supported in 64bit, and the Athlon 64's do both 32bit and 64bit.

Yes it will run fine. 64 bit supported means it uses 32 bit but it can also run 64bit

Anything other than a Dual Core or 64bit upgrade wouldn't really by an upgrade, its the way forward now, OS and Apps are gearing more and more to these hardwares.

But at the end of the day its whatever you can afford.

Well, I run 32 bit stuff, on a centrino duo, and I like the setup a lot, it makes EVERYTHING run like lightning, and yet, if I need to I can always use 64 OS's and software.

I have a P4 processor in my PC, and it only runs 32-bit. The thing is, 32/64bit hybrids are fully 64 bit, with 32bit compatibility (it temporarily modifies the app/os/whatever to 64bit)...Ot they are fully 32bit, and take 64bit OSs/programs/whatever into 32bit mode. So, in which case, 64bit is better all around.

my P4 is fast for a 3 and a half year old processor. it has 3.66Ghz, which is remarkable for a processor of that degree.

As it stands right now 64bit is still premature. Its not being used to its full extent but in a few years that will change for sure.

And you sir, will fail miserably. Core 2 solo uses socket M, whereas P4 is socket 423 up to 775. Do the math (if you can), it's like trying to fit a square in a round hole

As fast as you can get - Intel Xeon Quad Core, 32 or 64bit.. thats only if you can afford it though..
