Aqua-Soft ForumsOkay, I'm not sure how Mac OS system replacement works, but I've always assumed that people made a DMG, gave the icons a certain codename for their respective files, and told the thing "Replace". And so, this must be why so many people make them: Macs are made to customize.
Well, howz about a program that allows you to do this, for Windows, drag-and-drop style?
The program should have the entire default Windows icon set, and a placeholder for the replacement icon. For example, going down the list, you would see at the top "Explorer", then a place to drag your icon. The next one down: "Internet Explorer" and so on and so on. These presets should make it easy for people to replace the Windows look, without missing anything. In other words, if the program/file/icon is seen in every copy of Windows, there should be a place for it.
For the programs not on Windows, that your your comp manufacturer put on? Well, assuming everyone has Firefox, as they should, and your set has an icon for it, why not be able to drag Firefox to the list? Drag it, drop it, and fill the placeholder with an icon. Assuming not everyone's got Firefox in the default folder, the program should check the registry for the location of programs on other computers.
Once you've got all your icons picked out, and the list is done, hit save. The program should then save everything in a custom archive, like a Widget or Rumshot theme. Then people can open it up, edit it a little bit, save it again, whatever.
Ooooorr... don't want it modified? What if the program made installers out of these archives. I guess NSIS would be the installer of choice, or something so you can customize the installer text and pictures. Then, the whole thing is saved as a .exe for installing the icon set you've put together. And, of course, a backup/uninstaller... type...thing. As it will change your system files.
This program would help me, and surely some other customizers. I just never got into the whole IconPackager thing, and customizing your icons one by one is just too much. Plus, I'm just so tired of forgetting a program I wanted to change. This program will allow you to go into your icons folder, have the program/file/default icon place to the side, drag your stuff over, then save it for moving, sharing, or whatever.
Other features to be considered:
- PNG to ICO conversion, built in.
- The ability to have your default icon size changed upon restarting Explorer.
