Okay, well my friend was stupid enough to take another idiot's entire registry and combine it with his. Obviously his machine is now so f**ked up it wont even start to boot. Displays MBR ad and then just hangs at boot with all these flashes and eery sounds. Is there absolutely no chance whatsoever to get his data back or is he up sh!t's creek

you ask about getting his data back.. just take the harddrive and slave it to another machine.
rebooot, press F8, choose "Last known good configuration"
i tried that already...no luck, and he doesnt have another machine to put it into and im defnitely not putting it into mine.
Ok, XP creates a backup of the registry, use the installation cd and use the repair installation option. then restore the registry.
We cant run from the installation CD...we can't do anything
his harddrive ain't gonna corrupt your pc.. but dj's way's prolli more effective..

i know it wont corrupt my system, but its a big thing to take out and put back in....

You cant boot from windows cd at all? Make sure bios is set to boot from cd (just checkin that thing first in case it might help). If you manage to boot from xp cd you could install a new copy of windows and if he has a cd burner of some sort install nero or some other cd burning tool just to save his files. Theres also some linux releases that dont require installation but boot off a cd rom that u cud burn for him. That might help backing up his files as well. Just throwing some ideas that i wud try if that happend to me.

NC, make it "accidently" combined...because he did it on purpose. he told me, and i saw for myself.
follow shinters advice on the bios. your registry has nothing to with booting a cd/dvd. the repaid console is very powerful and can fix it withing minutes.
