My documents "open folder" link

When i link my documents i get two icon placeholders - one for open and one for a closed folder to link to but when and how do i see the open folder icon becasue it does not change when click to open. Do help on this. I of course have understood the full and empty recycle bin desklet working

The open folder icon is the one you see when you drag files over the desklet to move them to that folder.
