Hello,
today I bought some EMTEC (BASF) DVD+Rs Double Layer. But my MacBook can´t recognize it. I thought that my MacBook (Core Cuo, 2GHz, Sept. 2006, SuperDrive) could read and write DVD+R DL. On the Apple page i found out that the new MacBook (Core 2 Duo) defintely has a SuperDrive with DL compatibilty. But I can´t find any information bout my "old" MacBook. Maybe it´s only a problem with the type of DVD+R DL?

click on 'disc burning' under the 'hardware' sublisting (on the right of the window)
This should tell you all the available formats your able to burn to or supported media types if you like.
OK, thx. I checked this (no DL´s) and than I asked my Mac dealer. The Core Duo MacBook doesn´t read and write doublelayer DVDs (with the UJ857-SuperDrive). Only the new Core 2 Duo MacBook is able to read and to write DL´s.
I don't have a Mac, but my Toshiba Qosmio G15 has a Matsushita UJ-836. It reads DL discs only. I can't write them.
I think your mackbook should be able to real DL, but not write them. I might be wrong be but I don't think reading DL disks won't be there.
It should read DL disks, but of course theres nothing to read on a blank disc so dont expect anything from the DLs you bought 
i've noticed for most Laptop it oftenly label in front of a disk drive, watever it says on it should be supported. like a DVD/DVD-R/DVD+R and DVD+R DL any of those on it?
By the way, most DVD Drive nowaday read Doulbe layer disc. Writing is another story correct me if i'm wrong

u could take a look at about this Mac, it's under Disc Burning/Media type if it says DVD+R DL
Thx to you. No. The hardware info on my MacBook only says, that it can read / write all R/RW-media, but nothing about DLs. I read that only the new Matsushita UJ-857D in the MacBook with Core 2 Duo can read and write DLs. The "old" UJ-857 (without ´D´) in the "old" MacBook with Core Duo can´t do the job.
That is funny... since I've iBook G4 and it DOES read DL DVD disks (I know I've rented few movies which where DL disks).
Any DVD drive that is less than 5 years old can READ a DL disk.
Just about every full length movie you rent from the video store on DVD is on a DL disk.
Why do you think the MPAA tried to stop the release of DL burners and media to the general public? Becuase you can make EXACT copies of released DVD's with DL media.

Exactly..... like I said earlier... your DVD Burner may not write DL disks, but it should definitely READ 'em.Any DVD drive that is less than 5 years old can READ a DL disk.Just about every full length movie you rent from the video store on DVD is on a DL disk.
Affirmative, my Core Duo Macbook is able to read DL DVDs though it cannot write em. Your best bet would be to buy another DVD burner that supports DL DVD writing, put it into an enclosure to use with your Mac. That's how I do to write DL DVD 
the older generation ps2's can also read dual layer media with difficulty. I've ruined 2 working machines with my copy of GTA san andreas..ah good times..
To be fair a DL Movie is not the same as a Dual Layer Data disc.
(the way its written,its generally the speed they are written at that causes a problem)
For another example how fickle Optical Drives can be, My old 1Ghz Emac will struggle to read any DVD I have written on any 8x media.
