Bets on iPod 6G

I don't know about you guys but i'm not so sure about this whole iPod 6G thing...I mean...why would they make the screen the entire size of the iPod? This is a complete invitation for smudges, scratches, and everything else we do to prevent damages to our precious iPod screens....So what do you all think?

Found some more stuff:

up to 120GB hard drive

HID = Human Interace Device (whats that btw)

Built in FM Radio Tuner

All Types of Vehicle Support

GPS Locator

No iPod Fullscreen at all?: clickie

I prevent damage to my iPod screen? Huh... this is news. You should see all of the bumps, dents and scratches it has on it. All over the thing. I can't see my reflection on the back any more!

Vehicle support isn't a problem with Apple,or the iPod, it's the vehicle manufacturers. They have to impliment it. It's not difficult at all, really.

HID - isn't that the iPhone's touch screen? Or am I mistaken? I probably am.

EDIT: The article you linked to is from November 2006, before the iPhone was released.

I think if Apple made an iPhone with a full screen, why not an iPod?

... but then again, I think Jobs sort of hinted that the iPhone WAS the widescreen iPod all the rumours hinted of... I dont think it really matters, widescreen or not, you can be guaranteed the next iPod will pack some innovation of one form or another.

Well you can be guaranteed the iPod will one day reach 120gb... with time- capacities are always increasing, they will continue to do so...

I think the main priority will not be capacity, but rather physical size... iPod capacity is already good. I think this year we will see the iPod move from Hard drives to Flash storage.

EXCITING. Flash storage means faster file transfers, sexier slimline designs, faster music access times (*not that this has ever been a real issue), but most importantly- no song skipping, no moving parts, no damaged hard drives... it will make the iPod more hard wearing and reliable.

Im hoping to see coloured alluminium cases like the nano ones, in use for the regular sized iPod... why not?

HID= the way people interact with the device... eg- the click wheel, or touchscreen... this could well be upgraded or changed, but I think its great the way it is.

Built in FM Radio- NO... its a great idea, but it wont happen... quite simply 3rd party developers make money from selling you FM remotes, and Apple wants to keep 3rd party developers happy... and besides they have thier own FM remote to sell. its better as an additional extra which you can buy (if you want to pay the extra $$$ for)

Vehicle support.... well.... they cant really do much more... only get car manufacturers to put in iPod jacks etc... nothing can really be done to the iPod itself to accomadate this, can it?

GPS locator.... no not on its own. Theres no point really having a GPS unless the iPod sells itself as a multifunction device (which the iPhone is)... iPod is for media. the end.

^ Isn't flash more volatile? Susceptible to data loss or summat?

^ Isn't flash more volatile? Susceptible to data loss or summat?

I would think that a hard drive, with moving parts and everything, would be more susceptible to data loss.

#448278

no, flash memory has a limit amount of read/write cycles (10^6 i think) and also can lose the memory by dropping the chip or giving it a physical 'shock' in this way.

a hard disk can get damaged by the read/write head damaging the disk, or opening the case and damaging the disk, otherwise the data is usually recoverable, even if the drive won't spin up or the head being ruined.

some of the downsides of flash memory are the upsides of hard disk memory, and the other way round, eg. Flash memory is fast, its expensive to get hard disks that fast, but they can't store large amounts of data yet, hard disks can.

i don't care about the ipod 6G, i've realised there's more to life then waiting...now only if this page would finish loading

i don't know who this ellen doppler chick is, but: never say never, i always say. it kinda sounds like a bogus quote. can anyone really imagine anyone at apple saying:

Basically, we have decided that the eighty-gigabyte iPod + video is good enough for the average consumer of today, and also of the foreseeable future. I mean, it plays songs, videos, Podcasts, and even movies now--frankly, we just can't think of anything else that it needs to do.

just doesn't sound legit to me...

#448303

i agree with shmengie. hellz no! apple would never say that unless Stevie committed suicide and BIll Gates took over. only possibility

#448317

My bets: It will be widescreen, with coverflow. It was also be around the same size as the iPhone, possibly $50 dollars more, and same amount of space. White and black, and that's about it.

#448362

this sounds completely bogus to me...i mean...full screen is definitely a big plus, but what if you smudge/scratch/wtv the screen? its difficult enough as it is keeping the screen free of marks and notations, full sized will only make it worse. the center button on my ipod is scratched...can i expect this with the rumoured full screen one?

#448363

not true. i hear that the iPhone is having some glass alloy that has a high resistance to smears, smudges, etc. and if it does get smudgy, then you can do 1 swift wipe on your sleeve and it will look brand new

#448365

hmm...sounds convincing enough. damn it...i'm gunna look like a fool with a little iPod screen now =[...any estimated prices?

Hmm... I disagree with U... Flash memory CAN store large amounts of data, like all things technology related it just needs time for prices to come down and for capacities to increase... but I guess the key word in that sentence was 'yet' ;)

Physical shock does a lot more damage to a hard disk than to a flash disk... well maybe not so much to the data itself BUT to the player... because there is moving parts in a HD player, its more likely to go bung when dropped, like dropping an old record player with many pieces versus.... umm.... a .... errr.... solid thing... yes.

^ Isn't flash more volatile? Susceptible to data loss or summat?

Nup. Ram is Volatile (and subsequently faster) compared to Flash memory which is non-volatile (and slightly slower);

Flash memory is non-volatile, which means that it does not need power to maintain the information stored in the chip. In addition, flash memory offers fast read access times (although not as fast as volatile DRAM memory used for main memory in PCs) and better kinetic shock resistance than hard disks. These characteristics explain the popularity of flash memory for applications such as storage on battery-powered devices. Another allure of flash memory is that when packaged in a "memory card", it is enormously durable, being able to withstand intense pressure, extremes of temperature and immersion in water1.

Hmm good point! I stand corrected... but still ... how many companies made webcams specifically for the mac? (not many) now how many companies make remotes for the ipod (lots).

My point being that Apple didnt piss many companies off by putting an isight into the imac/macbook, they would if they put a remote into the ipod..... do you think?

FM Radio support...

As in pick up Radio stations... nah... won't happen.. tacky and pointless.

FM Transmitter Like iTrip... Nah... What Levi said.

Wireless? Maybe (Large Power consumption though)

Bluetooth? Maybe (Large Power consumption also)

Full Screen? definetly, iTunes movies/Movies on ipod suddenly become worth while... You tried watching a full movie on a 5G iPod... gives you a squint (Although nice idea)

As far as damage to screen... gonna be no different to current iPods or iPhone... people are just gonna have to buy a case and or look after their expensive toys.

Flash... Without a doubt... Like Levi says only thing holding back this at moment is price of Flash memory.. they have already made noises that Laptops will have flash based in the near future HD.

thanx for summing up my lengthy quotes :P ...

as for blue tooth and wireless- I think that could be good... I was having a discussion the other day with a teeny bopper chick who was like

"cant you send songs to other iPods?... then why are they better than a mobile phone? I dont get it"

... ohh dear. OK so song 'squirting' and 'beaming' is very much a zune/mobile thing... but If Apple to implement something similar, you could be guaranteed its cool.

But then again, Jobs has said No... and copyright limits iPod from having phone like abilities (drm is so stupid isnt it?)

#448756

I think bluetooth will be in it, stand-up optional docking station, option of transfer over bluetooth if it's possible or wire, and wifi connection for purchasing songs on it.

#448757

I don't see any appeal in connecting to others iPods (personally anyway) but I would love to be able to sync my iPod via my wireless network that would be sweet.

Be nice to get an affordable good quality set of wireless/bluetooth earphones/buds too.

#449054

I was just thinking the other dayt how cool it would be to have your iPod in the near vicinity of the computer, and be able to transfer songs like that. I couldn't care less about transferring songs to a friend's iPod, but wirelessly syncing and updating, now that's cool!

#449064

My biggest want for the iPod G6 (other than it being a stripped down version of the iPhone) would be to add Sirius/XM satellite support (merger will be finalized soon). Oh, I hope so much for it!

#449111

If the ipod 6th gen was a stripped down version of the iphone with more storage that would be awesome..they have the technology now so it should happen....but the price will go up quite a bit

#464062

If they'd just use the display from a PSP it wouldn't scratch near as much. It' s a much harder surface.
