File Extensions in windows XP

is it possible to force explorer to open any file without an extension on it using notepad automagically?

it's cool showing the open with dialogue box, albeit rather long with multiple files. Is it possible to get it to open with a doubleclick, and rightclicking to get other programs to open it using the open with menu?

i know nautilus can do this natively, so there must be an option i'm missing in explorer...

not 100% sure on this, but try this:

open regedit and go to hkey_classes_root|*. expand the * folder. in the right-pane, right-click a blank area and select new|string value. name it "Content Type" (no quotes) and give it a value of "application/notepad" (no quotes). reboot. lemme know.

i tried this and i get this error on startup:

"ERROR 314, UNABLE TO FIND APPLICATION"

"THE APPLICATION WILL NOW CLOSE"

what the hell? first it says it cant find it, then it says that its closing it? wtf? doesnt make sense. did a system restore to revert it back.

modding the registry always scares me.

Make a backup of your registry (or the relevant section) before you follow shmengie's suggestion, of course.

I didn't bother scrolling down all the way, so I don't know if this works :P.

P.S: Yes I did. It works fine. My Google search terms were "explorer open file without extension default," and the link was on the first page at the bottom. Still, I don't blame you--sometimes it's tough to know how to word those Google searches!

ARGH stop encouraging Google searches!

Notice how your search brought up a forum? (kinda)

Speaking of "Open With.." is there a way to customize your entire right-click menu, and have a different menu for file types? i.e. when i click "Edit", i don't want Paint, but Photoshop instead.

Yeah, a 'forum' with the answer.

thanks nc!, would never put in the word default...i don't know why...
