Notebook always on standby?

hi there ppl!

ive got myself a new laptop (sony vaio, intel core duo 2, 1 gb ddr2), that means, its the first laptop i ever had. i only used desktop pc's before. and now ive got this big question and im not sure if im doing any harm to my new baby... :P

i used to leave my desktop pc on for nights, that wasnt a problem. i was also told that servers and other important or public computers (also the pc's in the computer pool of my university) are being left ON for very long periods of time (half a year), because shutting down and powering on a system repeteadly is harmful.

now, having a laptop, i am mobile, and thats the way it should be it, right? my first fear was that i should avoid putting my machine to standby and then into its case and moving from one place to another.

so: is it harmful to a notebook to leave it on standby/sleep and carrying around? is it bad for the components, can anything go wrong? for example when accidentally hitting something, to damage the hdd with its writing head?

this way, i started using shutdown more often. my next uncertainty aroused: is it ok to start and shutdown a notebook 3 or 4 times a day? are there any long term negative effects? there's some antique wiseguy who once said that "you should never interrupt a running system"... :))

and finally: supposingly i leave my laptop on or on standby for longer periods of time - can this cause any damage? parts dont seem to overheat, everything seems to be working just fine. ive got the machine 2 months already, and i swear i have never heard the cooler functioning. ok ok, i dont use any powerful video editing or CAD software but still...

ok, thanks for ur time and id be glad to recieve any feedback.

sorry if this might sound a little odd, but im new to the world of mobile technology and i dont know my way round.

thanks in advance!

alex

Check it out. The general consensus to all of your questions is that no, nothing you've asked will lead to harm. However, feel free to do a bit more research courtesy of Google. ;)

i agree. in my opinoin, i have a MacBook Pro that is completely mine :D, which

my system hasnt been shutdown until recently when i did a reboot for the 10.4.9 update. otherwise, it hasnt been shutdown for maybe 2 or 3 times ever since i got the thing. i put it on standby at night, and i leave it on during the day weither i use it or not. If im mobile, its either on standby or left on. Nothing has ever been wrong with it, and im assuming that it wouldnt matter with your labtop. Good Luck and welcome to Aqua-Soft

Just a word of advice: When it's on standby, just make sure your Wi-Fi is really turned off, either by hardware switch, or software. Because even when in standby-mode, it is still transmitting in some cases. A lot of notebooks have been stolen, using Wi-Fi sniffers to locate them. So this especially applies to you if you intend to be on the move with your notebook alot.

yipes. better do that from now on. dont want my MacBook Pro that costed a small fortune to be stolen! :P thanks for the tip, man

man that laptop sounds cool. Wish i had one with a built in cooler..

I was under the impression that during standby, the hard drive spins down, and the only power goes to the RAM to keep it working, and a small amount to the processor, that's it..

There is no problem leaving your notebook on for very long periods of time. The only downside is that the battery lifespan tends to be shorter as the charge/discharge rate isn't optimized. (However I don't know of anybody optimally charging/discharging their batteries anyway.) :D
