How do you create icons for Vista?

I know there have been some tutorials online for the 256px icons featured in Vista, but most (all) of these involve payware.

I have tried my luck in Paint.NET and saved icons in multiple resolutions but they always display as 48px on my desktop.

Anyone have any experience/insights into this?

Kind of off-topic. I like having desktop icons and I like 'em big, but how can I specify the sizes? Not just pick from the medium/small/large options?

I assume you're talking about Vista... this won't work in XP

Left click on an icon while pressing control, while you are doing this, scroll up or down with your mouse and the icon size should change accordingly.

Hope this helps :)

get this icon editor. it allows you to save 256x256 icons with compression for vista and it's free

How do you save the 256px as a .dll? i can't seem to find an option for that, only .iso.

Thanks Bogo!

This is exactly what I was looking for.

That works, but it changes the size of ALL the desktop icons, not just the one you clicked on...it is pretty cool though and I didn't know about this feature before.

Is there a way of changing a SINGLE desktop icon, say I want my computer to be big, but recycle bin small?
