Router slows down host internet connection

well i just picked up a Linksys 802.11/g wireless router. HOORAY!

so heres a question. Why does my host PC's internet access SOOOO SLOW?!?! I have (for all you ppl in the New York area) Optimum Online Boost, which is a Cable Internet service that has a whopping 30MB/s. But, after installing my router, my internet access on my home PC screeched its braked to a slow grandma-paced speed of 7MB/s!!! WHY?! this totally doesnt make sense to me.

Strangly enough, my computer that is useing the wireless card (my mother's old clunky Dell Laptop) has around 10MB/s, and thats from UPSTAIRS, AND WITH 40% SIGNAL QUALITY!!!

This rrrrreally doesnt make sense to me.

By the way my host PC is a HP Pavilion a1020n with 2GB of RAM and a 200GB Hard Drive.

if you were wondering i use 802.11/n Airport for my Macs, so i just use a completly different network for my PCs so that my Macs dont get downgraded to 802.11/g when i use my other router.

Just an idea:

I had a similar problem with my brothers router. The access was unbelievable slow even though the signal was perfect. A couple of hours later, I found out that we actually was connected to the neighbours unsecured router instead of his. I corrected the setup of our router, and after that it worked perfect.

oh. ouch. i hate when that happens. Yes, this can definatly slow things down a tad bit. Although, i think what he is talking about is that MetallicaMaster3 is having troubles with his host PC....

How would you messure 30Mps downstream? There is no server that would answer that fast.

Besides that I think you should try to optimize your MTU and read here:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/optonline

and here:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17919983

and basically better ask here:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cable,opt

and yes, maybe this is interesting too:

ah yes, and last you can try to clone the MAC-ID of your modem for your router, in case your linksys has a builtin modem.
