jesus, people still use modems? seriously, any modem you can buy today should be vista compatible. and i think a modem costs like $6 these days.

It's called DSL, ADSL, VDSL, Cable modem, Satellite... there are tons of ways.
Any current, off the shelf modem will work in Vista.

Nope.
All the technologies I mentioned only require a network card be installed in the computer.
The peripherals needed to make the connection are typically provided by the ISP.
The term "Cable modem" is misleading as it's not really a modem at all. It's a proprietary router.
DSL uses a special modem, but it is provided by my ISP (AT&T). On top of that, though, you might want to run routers, wifi hubs, switches, etc. but all of those are, for the most part, driver independent.
I have my SBC Speedstreem modem go to an Airport Extreme to a Linksys 8-port router to my computers.
And then there's an aircard that is really a phone that plugs into your computer/laptop. In a way, it's a true modem because it dials out for a connection.
