I'm trying to change my start menu icon and min, max, close buttons without using StylesXP.
I know I can modify the start menu's flag icon and text, but I want to just use a bitmap w/no text if that is possible. Also, I just want to modify my min, max, and close buttons.
Here is an image of want I'm talking about. I used Fireworks to create this.

well im assuming your using XP, in which case those are bitmaps in your current visual style.

Yes I am using XP. So were would I find these bitmaps?

WinME :6 . and feel free to ask as many questions as you like, we all started somewhere. 
first of all, youll need to dl a hacked uxtheme.dll file. you should find one on the StyleXP site. replace the one in your system32 folder with the dl'd one. that will allow you to use modified visual styles.
second, it looks like your using, and want to edit the windows classic theme? this will determin the file you need to edit. or even if it can be done.

Thanks for the help. Well the StyleXP site is down for some reason, so I'll check back tomorrow. Once it's back up I'll download the uxtheme.dll and check it out.

No...
It isn't "harder" to change Windows Classic. However, you are looking in the wrong place.
The Caption buttons arn't a bitmaped file. It is a System font. Marlett.ttf (hidden) in the font folder.
Now there "are" some hacked marlett fonts ave online (where I dont know, try virtualplastic.org) I you want to go the font hacking route yourself then your opening up a heap of worms.
You are restricted by the width of the font. It MUST stay at the default width otherwise its just garbage.
The start menu icon is in user.exe, start menu name is in explorer.
Easy to change, or why not use tclock instead? it'll do a whole lot more to both the start menu, clock, taskbar and is very very light on resorces.

No. It's easier to just mod the start button and the caption buttons, rather than recreating a full classic theme with only those changes.

the default windows theme is ugly..
and you're looking into a project not worth doing...
it's all visual styles and dll hacks nowadays

Well, I changed the start menu icon and text. I'm not sure if I really want to mess with the Marlett fonts. I might just live with the regular caption buttons.

The default windows "theme" isn't a theme anyway it's just the absense of one.
