[release-test] Weather Docklet Update

I would like to update everyone on the latest news from my tester Mr. Canderian. He has done a great job in testing this docklet and he just emailed me a possible resolution to all of the problems people are having with updating the docklet.

albeik,

I got good news, forget what I said before, well sorta.  The issue is not with weather.com.  It has to due with internet settings.  I did a bunch of checks on this on all my computers with different addresses and they all are updating and reupdating great now.  If you go to iexplorer and go to tools internet options and then settings and change it to "check for a newer versions of stored page: "every visit to the page".  So all you need to do to correct this issue and all the ones I mentioned early is tell people in the read me file or have the dll change the registry setting automatically.  This worked for me, I will let you know if it continues to update.  Also, if you look at internet files (cache) you can see that the dates for accessed and checked are now the same date and time, where before with autmocially setting in iexplorer it would be different checks and access times.  Well let me know what you think.

-Canderian

Sorry for double email, I just realized this when I saw my laptop had autoupdated and that was the only difference between that and my desktop and the dates thing too.  It was really all luck to see that.

Please give this a shot and tell me if this resolves your issue. I hope it does! :)

Thanks again everyone and thank you very much Mr. Canderian for your precious time you put in testing this docklet. :smartass:

seems to work for me. I use manual update since I'm on dialup and the icon wouldn't always change on the first try before, but now it just updated on the first

try.

I reloaded XP Pro and have yet to get it working properly. At times I see the updated weather information but most often it tells me that it has received an invalid unit from site. Somehow Something is blocking the weather docklet. I have zone alarm pro as my firewall. I have allowed complete access for YzDock with my firewall. I have set up IE as suggested, Does anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks

If you get an "Invalid unit from site" error; it means that weather.com is sending back a bad URL for some reason. That tends to happen. The data I get is something that looks like a popup Ad. It's weird... but I have no idea how to go about that at the moment.

However, that got fixed by setting IE correctly. I am not sure why yours still doesn't work.

Well here is as close as I can get to my Problems as I have remembered them.

1) Reloaded xp Pro, Added all my mods along with YZdock.

2) Yz Dock Weather wouldn't work at all until I registered XP Pro with Microsoft.

3) It worked Fine then. I updated Sp1 and all of the Updates and it didn't work. This may sound stupid but I am not sure if it hapened after the update or Packs iMail mod as I made them as similar times. I am sure the mod can't be behind this.

4) I have seen it update but very sparingly. I mean maybe once every other day.

Otherwise I just see the question mark.

5) I have tried several other zip codes to no avail.

6) I have been over and over through my fire wall changing settings and through IE6 the same. I just setup Outlook Explorer thinking that that may have something to do with it.

7) With My Firewall I will not let Messenger act as a server is this ok?

8) Often times I will not let Generic Host Process for Win 32 have access to the internet. I do however let all of the necessary programs have access to the internet for common functionality.

9)*$^%Me as I look at my dock I see the weather and the temp. Haven't seen it in days.

Well thats my story.

Thanks

Ok, Just reopened IE and it stated that it was not the default browser after I guess updating Outlook. As soon as I reinstated IE as the default browser Bam no updating Weather. I am off to download another Browser and see if that has anything to do with it.

#45310

Ok, so far Mozilla has not fixed the problem. I did go into preferences and asked it to renew the page every time

#45320

hmm... I have mozilla as my default browser. (I used the Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> Set Program Access and Defaults)

The weather docklet works fine over here. I think the docklet will still use the IE even if its not your default browser. The docklet uses the IE iNet libraries to connect to the internet.

I am really thinking of using a different internet library. Not sure what and how at the moment though.

I really have no idea how to help you out. I :give up:
