Setting up my X-Box 360

I got my 360 today, and I opened it up, plugged it in and turned it on. Originally it had a problem where the ring of light flashed red, but I fixed that, and then nothing would display. My TV is a Pioneer, and I am sure it is HD, seeing as it has all the ports (I don't know the technical names, so I'll be refferring to them by color ) When I switch the thing on the Xbox to HD TV there is no picture, then when I turn it to TV it works.. That's my first problem.

Second problem is that my 360 has a name already for xbox live... is this always like that or is my new 360 not so new?

Final problem is that when I put in gears of war, it said i needed to change to PAL -60 or something.. I did, I got to the menu on the game, and then I selcted campaign>single player>casual (difficulty setting) and then my screen went fuzzy.. kinda like a chessboard with scanlines (ish)

Only thing I have to say is: WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?!?! SOMEONE PLEAAASE HELP ME!

Well seeing as I don't have an HD TV i'm not sure if this will help you....

If you go into Console Settings in the dashboard then go to display, there is a menu with HD settings. I guess after that you could play about with the settings until it works right for your TV. Remember to switch the AV adapter to 'HD' instead of TV also afterwards. Sorry if this doesn't help much, but i felt i could answer this one!

make sure the inputs are on HD, make sure that on the TV you have it in 1080i or whatever it can do. double check the inputs. There are multiple inputs for HD, not just the regular 3.

What I would do is try setting it up on a different TV just to make sure it works, if not take it back and get another one.

if ur TV is a HD one, maybe you have to enable the HD mode and/or HD ports... try the TV's menu see what u can find... otherwise yeah, try bunking around in the xbox 360 settings.

What I did is I have the three HD cables (blue, green, and another one) in the back of the tuner, and the normal three (red white and yellow) in the front ports. Think this could cause a conflict?

Mmkay with a dad that works at Best Buy, I know just 'bout everything about HDTV. I sometimes go on trips with the MAGNOLIA crew and show the noobs how its done (no offense). This is what you need to check:

1) Compatibiltity. There are three types of HDTV signals. 480p, 720p, and 1080p. 1080i is also considered HD. Some TV's can only do one, some two, and few can do all of 'em. That's the first thing you need to check: make sure your TV is compatible with your 360's HD settings. A link to a Pioneer page with your TV model would be great. Then i can tell you what your 360 setting need to look like.

2) Cables. Just 'cause your TV is hi-def doesn't mean it makes that beautiful picure on its own. Of course, there's only one kind of cable that goes into the back of the 360, but several kinds for delivering an HD signal. Component is the one you described above, with three colored video cables. Now, wny you have the yellow, white, and red cables in, i have noooo idea. the HD cable is the only one you need. plug it into the back of your TV, know what input it is, and done!

As for the Live name and the PAL issue... where the heck did you buy this thing?

The whole getting it to work is a moot point, I would be more worried that the machine may be a refurb. I would get intouch with X-Box customer service and give them your serial number and find some info about it.

I helped a friend set up his 360 to his Samsung HD TV and that was plug in and go... it shouldn't be that difficult, hell the plugs are colour coded for a reason

Its very simple to operate, what you do is open it, usually right to left, and theres this black stuff, called text, which you can read, occasionally there will be sequences of black lines codenamed "diagrams" or "illustrations" they show you what connection goes to what port.

If you follow this correctly, you should be ok, i have a 360 setup here on my Sony Bravia HDTV its immense.

Well, sorry to crash your humor, but I read the freakin manual. My tv has some weird switches I have to play around with and my manual for the tv is in german.. So that would explain why I'm having problems.

Im sorry m8, just a bit of humour, to be honest if you hook it up via non-hd cables and use the standard AV connection you get your not missing out on a great deal, that said ive adjusted to HD everything being crystal clear, making out faces in crowds the depth of colour etc.

It doesnt sound too good for you at the minute, keep trying and im sure you will get there eventually and i would take the advice of the post above, call Microsoft with your serial number and make sure this was not a previously owned console ... providing the user that owned it registered it with Microsoft, remember many dont, even i havent .. yet.

I'm considering the purchase of an Xbox 360 (Premium), but I need a bit of clarification.

The Premium package comes with a HD-AV cable right? Well, I have a regular TV (no HD); so could I use those on it or would I have to buy the standard AV cables?

If you buy the premium package you won't have any problem, it comes with both HD and Non-HD cables.
