Can't change ID3 tags of AAC files

I want to get with the program, and add ID3 tags to all of my songs. I tried to edit my library (AAC, 96 BPM), and the id3 box was inoperable. Do they HAVE To be MPEG or am I missing something.

Nope--I just made a smart playlist of AAC files, selected one at random, and the id3 box is quite operable. I'm on a Mac, but there should be no difference. They shouldn't have to be MPEG.
