After installing Ubuntu, I can't see the HD in Windows Explorer

ok. just installed Ubuntu a little while ago, on my other internal hard drive.

But, before i installed Ubuntu my other internal drive it was visible, writeable and readable on Windows.

Now, when i installed Ubuntu on my other internal drive, and everything went good, i tried out Ubuntu.

When it came time to reboot and go into windows, the internal drive (named drive D) wasnt visible in explorer, and when i tried to use the Run command to open it, searched for it, EVERYTHING, it wasnt there.

But, i realized that there wasnt any other drive in explorer with the letter "D", it went from C to E.

its becoming a concern why i cant see that drive anymore on Windows.

I am using Windows XP SP2.

HP Pavilion a1020n

1GB RAM and shared graphics

Penitum 4 processor 3.04 GHz

edit: i am now on Ubuntu and i cant see my Windows drive on that either. (vise versa on the above thread.)

Windows cannot read ubuntu's filesystem and ubuntu cannot read windows' (ntfs).

oh, so that means that windows doesnt reconize the ext3 filesystem? ok good i was just wondering if anything was wrong with my system but i guess there wasnt. thank you kind sir. do you know of any program that allows windows to read it? just asking becuase i want to be able to. if not than thats fine too.

Well, seems you've reformatted the entire drive. Partition magic can give you more info on what filesystem is on the device. I'd say that it will most probably be ext3 if it's the case, you can try http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html this FS driver to read the data.

ok thank you very much. actually i didnt partion my hard drive. i have a 7GB internal secondary hard drive that i installed Ubuntu on it.

hmm yes i would like that. i have found an app that can read EXT3 so thats all done and goodie now.

yes it can write to fat32 natively. there is a program that writes to ntfs but it is use at your own risk. google it or look up ubuntuforums.org

It is possible to read and write to windows (ntfs) partitions from Ubuntu, with ntfs3g driver http://swik.net/ntfs3g . This driver currently have stable status, and it works flawlesly for me .

I'm on feisty fawn, and this driver is in fesity repositories, so it was fairly easy to install.

Install Linux into a Fat32 partition is the worst idea, even if it's possible, because Fat32 doesn't support Linux permissions.
