I searched...
and I could not find something that said how to paint an ipod.
I was wondering if there is a way to
1. paint an ipod at home (preferably not too expensive)
and
2. get that GORGEOUS product (red) paint. (metallic, red, glossy)
But i prefer my 1G nano with the chrome back.

i want to paint my ipod but i doubt theres anything out there that wil leave a very durable flawless finish so ill just leave it...i want to paint my iPod 4th gen backplate black to match the front (not U2 hehe)
I would advise against it, unless u know what ur doing YADAYA this could stuff up ur iPod YADAYA.
BUT
im guessing ur willing to take the risk.
My advice would be to disassemble the iPod, so that you're left with the shell you wish to paint only (this will most likely void your warranty). if you dont you'll be left with paint on the screen etc...
Dissasembling will allow you to be liberal and completely coat the surface.
as for paint;
if your looking for a budget solution.... then maybe.... nail polish and hardner. raid your little sisters draw and look for that fireetruck red, you know the one with glitter in it 
if you're prepared to get a little more sophisticated;
I'd take a trip to your local hardware store, or even better a car painter/panel beater.
I say this because the second of the two is more likely to have the sort of metallic red paint your after...
if you are painting onto a plastic surface, it might peel off?.... so ask the paint seller.
Hammerite is the only way to go... just dip yer pod in the bucket on a piece of string.
The only way to get a flawless finish on an ipod would be to strip the paint from the inside of the casing and then paint on the inside.
If this is possible I do not know.
In theory:
The older iPods may be like the older iBooks, where the case (front) itself is clear polycarb plastic and only painted white from the inside.
You would need to take apart the ipod, which involves disconnecting the click wheel
(no easy feat, and a pain in the ass to put back together.)
Soak the front panel in Isopropyl alcohol (to remove the paint, thats if they are painted from the inside to start with)
Then when all the paint is removed spray whatever colour you wanted, which would leave the outside still with a perfect finish due to the polycarb plastic being painted from the inside showing the paint through.
Simple in practice I suppose, but you gotta make sure your masking off the screen and the click wheel section from the inside... paint on these would mean stuffed iPod.
I wouldn't even bother painting the outside, you would have to mask off the screen and clickwheel which would leave ridges around these when painted.. leaving weak points for the paint to crack off.
As far as iPod Minis and 2nd Gen Nanos go if you were brave enought to remove the anodised aluminium casing from them (which is easy enough, just have to be careful not to damage the case) you could take them to any spray shop and have them sprayed up, or if you get the right powder coating paints strip the old paint off and repaint.... once again big risk unless you know what your doing.

This I know is a good idea. Car shops do custom paint jobs for people all the time. That's how I have glossy blue Xbox controllers. Now, there's gonna be warranty issues, etc., so for something like an iPod I'd ask them for advice, buy some paint, and do it on your own.
That's the best way to go. People who paint cars are paint experts. It takes an arteest. Combine their knowledge with some tech-geek on your block, and you should be set.

2. could the painter also get rid of scratches on the back?

That stuff does work... admittedly not as easy as wipe on wipe off... but it does work.
Thats why it isnt that cheap, and you don't get a lot.
You can buy very very very fine jewlers paste to get the scratches out of the back, but its never like new, and you find the harder you polish you tend to take out the engraving text on the back like the Capacity of the iPod and the other print.

lmao no s**t! (censored that myself). But i know it works cuz my friend tried it out on his nano. not the new colored ones, so that'd be 5g i think.
