Hey There
At present, I'm using a 256mb RAM module that came with my MacBook and a 1gb one from Crucial (I know that mismatch isn't ideal).
I bought a second 1gb module recently, but when installing it and trying to boot all that happens is I receive a black screen and the light on the front of the laptop stays on continuously.
Does anyone know what could be wrong here? I don't think the RAM is faulty but I suppose there's a chance that could be the case.

Okay, firstly make sure you installed the RAM correctly. Check the Apple user guide that came with your Mac and go over the steps (or does the MacBook allow user-replacing RAM?) Anyways, you should also make sure that the RAM is compliant with the specs of your Mac. Check by the Apple Online Store (See Memory under Mac accessories) and look for your model to see what the correct specs for the RAM are.
Is the second module also from Crucial, with about the same specs as the first? This is why I always buy kits (as in a matched pair of RAM). Though I admit that this may not always be possible financial wise. But it might be possible that the second module is faulty, judging by the fact that your mac won't boot after adding the new module. You can test it by just using one module at a time. When it fails to boot with one of them, then that one is your faulty RAM.

All this about installing in pairs isn't the be all and end all, this is only compulsory on the Mac Pros.
Are you sure you have the right RAM?
If you have them please post the full specs of the RAM you have ordered and we can see if there is a problem there.
