OK, so this has been bugging me for a long time.
I have an old iMac (as in, the original, 233 mhz iMac, blueberry colour) sitting in my closet and gathering dust. I want to put it to good use, so I'm considering upgrading the processor and memory.
The problem is, I don't really know how much it will cost to upgrade a G3 iMac that's over 5 years old.
So my question is: Should I upgrade my old iMac to a G4 processor, etc, or would shelling out $600 for an new Mac mini be the better choice?
if you have the money, the $600 will give you exponential returns over a $300 upgrade. plus, you really wanna sit in front of a 15" monitor all day?
buy a new mac FTW
1.) sexy hardware
2.) less hassle, includes more standards
3.) really sexy hardware
4.) it'll make you feel good about yourself
5.) run windows (erm?)
6.) it will be really sexy while you feel good about yourself while running parallels

memory is approx. 50-75ish or more/less
harddrive is another 90
so youre up to almost 300
a new mac mini is about 600
so, would you rather make a 300 dollar investment in a computer that you could mess up OR buy a new stock mac mini for twice as much, BUT you would have to buy periphials...
In all seriousness, buy the new system. You might even be able to eBay your current iMac for about 100-200 dollars to cover a monitor.
Hmm. I actually have all the peripherals (my mouse and keyboard are both usb and are compatible with mac, I think). I've taken all your advice to heart and it made me realize what a waste of money it would be to spend $300 upgrading an old mac, when I could just buy a new one for double that. Plus, I could technically just sell the Windows PC I have that's only about a year old...so...thanks for the advice; I'll probably have a real mac by the time the April Desktop Screenshots thread is posted.
