am i the last guy on the planet to know about this?

so i have this problem with my ipod in my car. the line-level out of my ipod into the line-level in of my car stereo isn't cutting it. i have to turn my car stereo ALL THE WAY UP to get a semi-decent volume from my ipod. that results in just a crapload of hiss. i've recently been researching building a 12vdc pre-amp to remedy this.

so, i'm kicking around the apple ipod forums and came across a program called ivolume, that sounds like it's just what i need. unfortunately, it's osx only. but, while reading through one of the threads, someone mentioned a similar product for windows called eupod. what this does is not adjust the volume of the individual songs, but, rather, bypasses the ipod's volume limiter.

so, i tried it out. it took about 5 seconds to adjust the ipod's volume. i ran out to my car and...WOW! what a difference! this free little utility is just awesome. there is no change to the audio quality (read: no hiss, no mp3-warbling), it's just louder.

anyways, i thought i'd share in case someone else needs something like this. so, without further ado:

edit: okay, after listening in my car for a bit, i suppose i might have been overly enthusiastic about the results, which are actually not all that earth-shattering. oh, there's an improvement, but it's like a 5 or a 6, not a 10. still worth checking out, if you need this kind of thing.

Are you using line-out from the dock connector, or headphone jack?

The signal from the dock connector output should be full volume and sound almost perfect.

well i knew about it, but since i have an us ipod i figured the volume wasn't capped.

also, i limit it at 3/4 myself to stop my ears from bleeding when i turn the volume all the way up accidentally.

lmao i have sound cancelling stereo headphones, and if i listen to them at full blast my nose and ears will start to bleed or i'll become unconsious.

gtn: yes i'm using the dock connector. the problem isn't the ipod, per se. for sure it's the low line-level input of my car stereo. i thought the output level of the ipod was contributing. and, like i said, running this program helped a bit.
