Sorry guys, i do not know if i post in the right thread, i need some advice. Somebidy is selling me this computer.

Intel R Celeron R

2.26Ghz

480 ram

20Gb

Is this fair enough for personal? for internet use?

TNx in advance!

480 RAM is certainly an odd amount, and 20 GB is kind of small these days--too small for movies and anything larger than a midsize music collection. 2.26Ghz processor is fairly good, though.

However, I'm a little concerned at the 480 RAM...I'm not even sure it's sold in those units.

How much are they selling it to you for?

i havent deal with the price yet. 20Gb is fine becuase it is upgradable. but i do not know what the 480mb ram is? is it upgradable? is it the memory?

#439219

ram is totally upgradable, everything inside your pc is pretty much upgradable and yes itll be okay for basic internet usage. dont expect to play any high end games or memory sucking programs.

guel27

you're not gonna pay more than 50 bucks for this, are you?

if u only use it for browsing internet... checking mail, it's most likely up to ur network provider Ask the person who's selling it for u, would it upgradable, how much memories can it limited.

I personally don't like much Celeron, it is damn hot right after a few hours and i mean HOT HOT perhaps u could cook some eggs with it. If this matches your budget then be it, 2.26Ghz like nightcrawler said not bad at all.

480 RAM umm...it's either 128,256,512 RAM and then 1 GB [gigabit] maybe that's how it counts as an old fashion way, i'd say it is memory :), check it out how much it is than maybe someone here will tell u whether

it worths or not

Thanks everybody for your quick reply. I'll just check it again and give all of you a feed back afterwards.

#439226

lol 480 ram means

1*256 stick

1*128 stick

1*64 stick

1*32 stick

that's one mix-and-match computer!

but he asked if it's good for web browsing, and it is isnt it?

#439240

If you use Ubuntu in it, 20GB is more than enough, on my laptop i have ubuntu installed on a small 15GB partition!

And 480Mb Ram is also enough for Linux, I have 512Mb and never had a slowdown

Now, if you want Windows, then you should have at least 40GB HDD, and think of upgrading to 1GB Ram...

I would like to buy a computer like that to be my Linux box. so I wouldn't have to dualboot anymore...=p

#439443

Yes, 40+GB for Windows XP would be ideal.

Don't worry about the RAM, guel27, I have 256MB, and it doesn't cost me too much trouble. (Unless you play a lot of games)

#439507

480mb sounds like a 512mb minus 32mb shared for graphics. pretty smart, huh?

#439529

thanks guys! the computer is good and fast. i just have one problem, the computer cannot detect the modem, it has a built in modem. PC Chips M987G motherboard. anybody has an idea what kind of modem does it have?

#441243
