Garageband question

Can I plugin my guitar jack to the back of an iMac or do i need some kind of hardware that connects to the iMac so I can connect my guitar to make live instrument tracks in Garageband?

For live instruments, you'll probably need a 1/4 in. to 1/8 in. cable plug converter. It's this piece of hardware.

I already have that jack. My question was, is there a input jack in the back of the iMac to where I can plugin my guitar cable jack?

I also noticed that when I plug in to the jack port, then played my guitar using Garageband, even the other unwanted noise are caught (dog barking etc.). Is the built in mic the cause of it? If so how can I disable it to get just the guitar sound?

System preferences => sound => input => select line in as your input, that should disable the builtin mic.
