have you ever heard of the Pippin?... Apple has a dark past which still haunts them.
- I think they should have sided with PS3 or Nintendo and developed a frontrow style interface able to stream media etc from itunes on mac/pc.

I Left Japan in 1994 and it was getting its pre-release hype going.
Came back to UK and waited patiently to see if we would get it... Never saw the light of day in europe.

Now, that's just plain scary. I was thinking about this just yesterday. This is exactly why I fear for the iPhone.
I don't recall apple had failed phone product earlier... besides, Apple has come a long way. They had shown that they learn from their mistake and they learn well. Take Newton, Pippin or The Cube.
They learned what they did wrong in Cube and made mini.
god forbid if apple wanna get into Gaming Console which I doubt as apple is primarily targeting Media/Entertainment devices.. iTV, mac mini, iPods, iTMS are all part of bigger strategy.
What they missed in newton might come back in iPhone (there might be a smart-phone version as rumour goes). IMO, newton was more like bad timing than bad device. Though I haven't ever seen any Newton myself, I knew few friends who did.... they still say they loved it to death.

I strongly agree!... I think as soon as Jobs came in he sorted out a lot of the problems with Apple... ok so he was there when the cube was created, but it was still a great idea and it inspired the mini as you say.
I think also the 20th anniversary mac inspired in many ways the current iMac with its all in the screen design and integrated form... its what apple does, they make inventive catastrophes and later turn them into masterpieces.
EDIT- They didnt have a failed phone, but they did have a failed camera and set top box (similar I guess to iTV)
