Any recommended GIF animation software

Hi all, and a Merry Christmas to those who aren't offended ^^

Was wondering if any of you fine folks could recommend to me a free app which is simple and intuitive for creating animated GIFs from still jpg images?

I want to make a christmas thingy for a friend and I am just overwhelmed with all the offerings at places such as Download.com and Softpedia.

I was hoping someone who has tried a few of them out could recommend a good app for this task.

Well, what I do for gifts is create all the composition and elements on separated layers in photoshop, then I use ImageReady. If you use photoshop, handling imageready for animation is easier than anything else.

I primarily use GAP with GIMP gat the moment.

Microsoft GIF Animator is a good basic one.
