Aqua-Soft ForumsIn the avatar upload options, it says you are allowed to use .png's as avatars, but if you try and upload a .png it says that file type is not allowed 
Avatar Upload Problem
how big in size was your png avatar (and capacity)?
same size as the one i have now, but now its a .jpg
If your avatar is bigger than the 60 kb limit, then it will not load, regardless of format. Since PNG's are a high quality format, they tend to get big as far as file size goes. You may be forced to use another format, such as gif (if transparency is your goal here).

pngs are allowed loook at half the members avatars, just try uploading it again if it is .png rename it to .PNG

anyway - your avatar looks perfect for a gif and i can asure you pngs sometimes dont utilize their transperacy correctly with certain browsers. so dont worry so much.
