Unmountable_boot_volume

I desperately need help. I saw some info on UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, but so far i didn't see anything that would apply to my comp.

My Win XP Pro just stopped answering to keyboard or mouse, and when I restarted it, it shows the bleu screen with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and STOP 0x000000ED 0x81790030 0xC0000032 0x00000000 0x00000000.

Whichever option I choose in Recovery Console, the screen comes up again. The system won't boot from the CD, same screen appears....

Any idea what this might be?

sounds like either a bad hard drive or a corrupted mbr (master boot record). get yerself a copy of ubcd and back up your porn data. try reformatting your hard, but be prepared to buy a new one.

try changing the settings in your bios pertaining to boot sequence, to get to your bios try f2 or f8 before where the xp screen would come up.

LoL before you do all this, try running a checkdisk, if the checkdisk doesn't solve your problem then go with what shmengie said good luck

to run checkdisk, boot from your windows CD, choose REPAIR when asked.

Wen you are in the recovery console type :

chkdsk /r

See if this works:

Go into the Recovery Console and type in FIXBOOT at the prompt.

If that flops, try FIXMBR. But you'd better pray hard. This can easily render the data on your drive garbage.

Maybe he did run. Or maybe the only computer available to him right now is the busted one. That's why I have a Linux Live CD handy for times like his.

FIXBOOT is safer than FIXMBR, because FIXBOOT just modifies the boot.ini file, whereas the FIXMBR command actually tinkers with a key function of the file system, and is thus more dangerous.

Unfortunatelly, as some of you predicted (and I was affraid to think of even) my HDD has died of natural causes and I have a new one now...

(and to make it funny... very funny... the new HDD should be 80GB byt Windows can only see 32GB..... :-) should i laugh or cry)

Hoogie, did you format using NTFS? Fat32 has size limitations. Use XP's built-in Disk Management to check/format/partition your drive. If you only have one drive, try using Partition Magic. Other option is to start again from scratch, partition your drive and make sure you format using NTFS. Good luck
