Mac OSX and PS3

Hey everybody,

has been a long time since I've been here, and I'm happy to be back, especially now I have the means to be back for a long while.

So I got rid of my PC and I bought me a brand new iMac 24inch with an extra 2GB RAM and a 256MB videocard. Recently I was amazed to see that the new PlayStation 3 will have a HDMI output, for a full 1080i HD display. I was wondering, is there any way that I can attach the PS3 to my Mac? And if so how?

I would already be very happy if I could just use my iMac as an HD display monitor for the PS3. Is that possible? If so, how? Just thinking of a way to see HD-films, and games now and then, in my room here.

I hope this is the right section to post this.

Oh, I'll be releasing some things in the very near future. Yes the Asterix set I promised a year ago, is still coming.

You could attach the PS3 to the iMac but you would have to view it through some software and to be honest you wouldn't get the HD picture you would be hoping for.

At present there doesn't appear to be any type of connection to go through the iMac (as far as cables go) You could do the above by using some form of converter box and then through FWire but for the price of them.....

Save your dollar and buy a HD TV.

Connecting it to a canopus, is that an option? I'm also afraid of not reaching the HD quality, but a full HD TV costs like 5000 EUR at least here..

Yeah thats an option the ADVC55 would capture it, but you wouldn't be able to use the HDMI outputs on the PS3, it would have to be standard Video Out, in which case you might as well just buy a cheap LCD TV or even a monitor.

I think you would be spending money on something that isn't really worth it.

Who knows though the PS3 is still early days... something might be available at some point in the near future.

If you can't get it to work with the iMac's display but still want HD, you could buy a LCD monitor and a HDMI to DVI cable and it would work fine (HDMI is just DVI with audio). For the audio, you could use the digital out optical and hook it up to a receiver or PC speakers with an adapter. Try to buy a monitor that supports HDCP. Games should not be affected by HDCP, but movies in the future may. If your monitor doesn't have HDCP, movie playback will be limited and not in full HD. You would have to get a large monitor that supports a resolution of at least 1920 x 1080 if you want full 1080p HD, but for a lot cheaper you could get a smaller monitor that does at least 1280 x 720 for 720p. There isn't much of a difference in quality I hear.
