[help] Burner Is Busted.

Okay, my CD Burner is borked. No matter what it just reads 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free. No matter if I have a cd in or out, it still says that. When the cd is out it should say "Please insert disk" like my other drive does. When I put a cd in it gives me the cursor with the spinning cd, but it doesnt do anything, nor show the contents of the cd. Anyone had this happen to them?

BW I took it apart and it seems to be no mechanical problem, also I updated drivers and everything. It was working a few days ago.

the lazer has probably went out or has dust in it, I had one do that a couple of weeks ago, what brand and model burner is it?

took it apart? well, my first recourse would have been to use a can of compressed air to blow away the dust that might have been on the lens. did you do that while the drive was disassembled?

The one I took apart didn't have any mechanical problems in it either, since this was just an old CD-Rom drive I would just mess around with it while it was apart and i noticed the laser wasn't working, it was moving and everything, but no light. Another reason why it isn't working could be a burnt out chip on the circuit board, I have seen several with this problem.

I'll check it out, thanks for the help!

errrr.... if all fails, you could light it on fire... doesnt solve your burner being broken problem... but its fun to watch things glow! :) errr... however, dust on the lens isnt uncommon... you could also check for loose connections, or if its an older burner, an updated driver. (quite possibly windows accidently deleted it in mistake of it trying to randomly deleting your important documents) (trust me, i know, i programmed it.)

If all fails, a lighter and a cd works for burning.... charge a friend $5 and say that your'll *BURN* a cd for them....

heh, works every time.
