[help] Encoding Mp3s

What the best bit rate to encode to? Static bit rate or Variable bit rate?

I use the default setting on Exact Audio Copy which is a VBR averaging at 192kbps. For me, it's the best compromise between sound quality and file size, which is especially pertinent if you have an mp3 player.

I use Musicmatch Jukebox and I rip CDs to MP3s through VBR 192Kbps. It sounds terrible on my desktop's Sony speakers, but good on my iPod.

There a coulpe of things to consider. Space, do you have alot? Are you creating these MP3s for a back-up? What MP3 codec do you wanna use? ie: Zing, LAME?

What ripping software do you wanna use? I own over 600 cds (look at my sig to see the list) I rip everything as if it were a back-up. I use Audiograbber With the L.A.M.E. codec. I encode at quality level 3 (about 192kbps) and VBR. A cd usually ends up at about 60-70 megs. LAME is the best codec to use but it is the slowest. If you have a newer PC you will be fine.

I use Exact Audio Copy with LAME, highest setting. 320k and it encodes in VBR.
