Internet Connection Sharing

I got my new iBook 12" 900MHZ yesterday, which is great. :woot: Shall put my screenie up soon. Still getting used to it, but it's such a great toy I'm mainly playing with it at the moment.

I want to connect it my Windows XP Pro box with the Internet Connection Sharing thing. Unfortunately, I've got no idea how to do it. I've got my Network Card installed in my PC, and have connected the Ethernet cable from the PC to my iBook. I was expecting some sort of notification on the Mac to tell me that I'd just plugged into a network, but it didn't. The XP does notify me when I plug and unplug the cable from the iBook though, so I know that it's connecting OK and my network card is kosher.

I'm not sure I've even set the network up correctly - it's not even asked me to set a username or password for anyone connecting to the network. Can anyone with experience give me a helping hand?

Btw - anyone know what the exact screwdriver type needed to remove the iBook RAM shield? I've never seen a screw so flat before - all of my Philips screwdrivers are too flat. Am stuck with 128MB with 512 sitting waiting on the table for the moment. :rant:

this is how i connect my g3 b/w panther to my win2k3 machine.

find out the network address of the ethernet card in your xp machine,

then assign an address to the ibook, anything in the 192.168.2.*** range.

when asked for a subnet address use 255.255.255.0. gateway will be the

xp address. if possible put the gateway address in dns server search box.

sorry, i'm not in front of my machines now.

this might help if you don't know how to get the address of your xp machine:

control panel->network connections->local area connection->properties.

to activate ICS:

same as above except choose your default dial-up name->properties->advanced

-> check ICS box.

might change your xp card address to 192.168.0.1.

Thanks for the advice RoyalPain. Unfortunately I'm even more confused now.

I've never ever touched anything to do with networking before. I'll attempt to outline the situation step-by-step, because I really didn't explain it too well before.

I connected the cable between my Network card in XP and my iBook. I went through the 'Network Setup Wizard' in XP and chose the 'This computer directly connects to the internet and the rest of the network will connect through this one' option. I selected my ADSL connection. I named the Windows computer, then named the workgroup. It then takes a bit of time to process this data. I am not asked to do anything on the Mac. It offered me a network setup utility to install on the other system, but as it was a *.exe file, I didn't bother with it as it's useless on the Mac.

I'm asked to restart the PC, and I do. I restart and when I do, the system tray has the two little screens. A pop-up prompt comes up saying "Connected at 100 Mbps." The right hand screen stays illuminated. However I receive no notification of this connection on the Mac. I've tried dozens of combinations in the System Preferences>Network panel, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm worried because I feel that the Mac should be giving me some feedback. I've enabled all kinds of sharing in System Preferences>Sharing.

Thanks for advice, but I'm in above my depth here and deeply confused. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ooh, some progress people. I read RoyalPain's advice over and over, and managed to get the network connection shown up, which is nice. So I can steal files now from my Windows box, but the Internet Connection isn't being shared yet.

First, you have to take a crossed rj45 cable, not a straight one (unless you use a hub)

Then, you simply set your iBook network conf to DHCP

well different story, now u need another nic card.

cos' u need one nic to connect to your internet connection and the

other one to connect to your local network(ibook).

Strange event here: I actually had it working for a few seconds. Was just surfing on to download Safari however, and my PC restarted itself :rant:. I'd not unchecked the 'restart on error' option in XP yet, as I only reinstalled XP this afternoon. Unfortunately I've lost all the settings I had it on. I'd been setting it up manually, and I'd finally managed to get it to work. Now it's not working again.

Regarding the ADSL issue - my ADSL modem is a USB modem, not an ethernet model. I'm plugging the modem into the PC's USB port, and the iBook into the PC's Network Card port. Friends of mine have achieved Internet Connection Sharing this way, using the same modem (although not with a Mac admittedly), so I'm not sure why you think this will pose a problem. I'll let you all know how I'm getting on anyway, it's going to be a long night I think.

get a router, conect the DSL to the router and then hook up the XP box and the iBook to the router's hub and done...

you may have to configure the router to work with the DSL modem, but that's no biggie...

basically in the ibook you have to turn on the ethernet in the network control panel located in the system preferences and tell it to automatically grab one IP using DHCP...

in case you are sharing a dialup conecction, you will have to turn on ICS on the XP box and hook up the ibook and the Xp box with a "crossover" RJ45 ethernet cable...

that shsould do the trick in both DSL / DialUp environments...

so you have a aDSL that works via PPPoE...

the first thing you need to do is chek if the XP box has the "internet connection sharing" enabled... if it's not "ON" turn it on...

then you will need a network cable which is known as a crossover cable so the computers can talk to eachother

conect both iBook and XPbox via ethernet using that cable... then if you've done everything right, and have enabled ethernet on the iBook you should be able to browse and access the internet... but remember... if you need to dial in to your DSL, do that first

Well, heres his problem though, and lemme just say that it absolutely SUCKS! You must have one of those modems where your only port on the back of the damn thing is a USB... honestly, I hate it when DSL companies do that. I would suggest finding a Modem that DOES have Ethernet, run it through a router like iWannabe is saying, then send one port to the PC and one port to the Mac. Otherwise, your going to be having Network Hell trying to run through XP's ICS. Honestly, its a bad idea from the get-go in my opinion to use ICS, because you have to leave the Windows Box on at all times for the ICS to stay active, and it will slow down stuff on the Windows machine.

i run ICS on my WINXP box which is merely a PII 266mhz with 256mb RAM and it works pretty fine to me... no slowdowns whatsoever...

the best solution is going with ethernet all the way combined with a arouter... or better yet, aa wireless router so you can roam with the iBook and still be connected to the network/internet

I'd love to get wireless, but I live in a one roomed flat in Paris which isn't exactly big (and has two phone sockets), so it would be slight overkill. All my friends think I'm mad for having two computers, so as for wireless.... I've got a five metre ethernet cable which stretches practically from the PC to the top end of my bed, so that should be good enough for me. :woot:

I'll keep going at the ICS. I once again had it working just, but again it restarted my PC. So I'm updating modem drivers and network card drivers, and doing a full Windows Update. That ought to sort things out. If not, then I'll look into a router, but I'd like to save money if possible, as I've just bought this wonderful laptop, and am feeling a bit skint. Once this internet connection issue is sorted, I'll try and enjoy it, keeping the PC on isn't really a problem for me.

to save some money, hubs are cheaper than routers.

also if you assign the ibook an address you can easily transer files

b/ween both machines.

if you are adventurous try and make a crossover cable.

Okay, lost of things had been told here that are not so useful.

To get it working, first, connect the pc to the ibook via the crossed rj45 cable.

Then connect your usb modem to the pc.

Configure the PC nic to have this address: 192.168.0.1 with netmask 255.255.255.0

When you're done, share the ADSL connection. (for info, it's PPPoA, not PPPoE)

On your iBook, configure the network to DHCP.

You're done.

Note, if this doesn't work (well it should), try make the PC nic obtain it's adress automatically

Thanks siwu. Sometime around 6 o'clock this morning I finally managed to find this out for myself. However what I'm now getting beggars belief. I actively share the connection (ie I use the Mac to access the internet) for maybe two or three seconds, then Windows gives me a blue screen, telling me a driver of mine is faulty. With XP these blue screens are generally more serious than their 9x counterparts, and I'm basically told that my computer has failed and I must restart. I'm assuming it's the network card driver - although the card works fine when I just want to transfer files from the PC to the Mac.

So I'm now searching for another driver. It doesn't help that Windows does not accept the driver that came with on disk with the Network Card, so following a good Google search I located drivers for a card that this card was 'compatible' with. I guess it wasn't all that compatible. It probably serves me right for buying a 9€ network card from a completely unheard of company (Connectland).

Still, I'll keep going. I know one hell of a lot more about networking now though, so something's been learnt.

A friend of mine had this issue, his computers restarts everytimes he wanted to access the net. It was a problem with windows which kept his previous network settings.

Try uninstalling your nic, and delete every registry entry of it, reinstall, and test
