[help] Xp Icon Probz

Hello peeps

I have a very annoying problem, and hopefully one of you knows a solution. :shy: My OS is XP Professional (for the record) and I used untill a few days ago Icon Packager for changing my icons (wel duh). I used a theme wich changed all the icons (even the Word-icons and so on), and I uninstalled Icon Packager. So now I'm back on the original XP-icons. The only problem is that the systems doesn 't seem to change the Word icons (and some others) back...

Did you "restore original" (or whatever the option is) in IconPackager? If not you might try to install it, restore window's original and be lucky. Can't guarantee if it will work, though.

Yup, seen that, been there. Still nothing I don 't understand why he does this. A few months ago I did the same and restored the windows default icons, and everything was OK...

Is it maybe possible to change the icons in XP without using a program like Icon Packager? Pff, I'm desperate...

Perhaps try using System Restore to go back to the point before you installed Icom Packager? That's assuming, of course, that 1) there is a restore point, and 2) you installed Icon Packager recently. Also, perhaps re-associating the files with the appropriate app may fix it. Good luck.

The thing is that i want to get rid of icon-changing apps for a while, so is it maybe possible of changing the windows shell files back to standards (if it 's possible that Icon Packager changed them off course)? And does anyone then has an idea which to change and where to find them?

That is exactly what I am talking about. Icon packager can restore all your original icons. That is why i suggested to reinstall Icon packer, restore the icons and uninstall iconpackager.

i don't know if icon packer can not restore the icons if it has been uninstalled in the meantime. If so you can uninstall it for a second time anyway.

I reinstalled Icon Packager, did an icon restore and still nothing... Is there another icon app which does the same and maybe can do the trick? Because I'm kinda out of ideas...

I downloaded a program called Icon Phile, and you can either select an icon of your choice or the basic icon, i chose the basic icon for example for a Word document, and now it seems that the icon you see at my first post in this thread for a Word document is a basic undefined icon (if you know what I mean).

Conclusion: the basic files have been changed somehow, does anyone know where I can get them back please? And which they are?

I actually had this problem on Win2k, with .avi, .mov and all of the other movie files, and what i did at the was reinstalling the whole sh##

It was the time for it anyway, my computer started using long time and so on

You can change icon file associations right in XP. Just open windows explorer. At top menu, click Tools/Folder Options. Then click the File Types tab. Find the .doc file type or whatever you want to change, and either click restore (to set back to original) or advanced to change the icon to whatever you want.

See? Now THIS is helpful.

Telling someone to use system restore can lead to issues NONE of us want to deal with.
