ico and png format

Can someone explain to me why Windows can't use png as an icon format?

I've converted a few icons now from png to ico and they just look so ugly, to the point of embarrassing.

I would had thought it was a simple thing for MS to up date, or have I just got rose tinted glasses on?

I'm not sure, but I think Vista might be able to use .PNG icons. Anyway, it's a technical issue--try searching Google for it.

Yeah, I read somewhere that Vista can use PNG icons.
