[help] Attention - Windows Update

@moderators: don´t know if this is the right place to post, so if u want move it. my reason for posting here is because many threads are about modding the system-icons in shell32.dll and so maybe they will read this thread, too.

a long way of modding the shell32.dll with icons could become a waste of time if u start the windows-update and install the new updates, because that take effect on the shell32.dll and after a reboot u will find all over the good-old standart windows-icons.

so i just wanted to give a warning.

sadly i can not remember the names of the updates. but they were today online for the first time. 17 juli 2003

The update in question replaces the shell32.dll file. Here's the KB name of the update...

It updates the version to 6.0.2800.1233. Do a backup of your shell32 file before the update, then after the update swap all the resources from the old file to the new - I used an app called Restorator - makes it quick and painless...

the second post telling me to backup my shell, hm. i think i have to explain:

i have a backup of the files, but while still thinking, that when microsoft update these files, it must be for a reason, i surly want to use the updated files and not any "old" vesion. (if we believe, microsoft speaks about "security updates", and for sure i want them.)

so my question now would be how to (maybe) copy the icons from a backuped file to a new?

Why don't you read the Davebo's post again man? He states clearly that you can use the prog called Restorator for this.

If you wanna update your shell32.dll then all you have to do is back up your old shell32.dll and then apply the MS security patch. After it's done, use Restorator to swap resources like icons and avis from your old file to the new one and leave other resources intact. That's it.

Hi, I'm trying to update the resources on the new shell32.dll with the ones from the old one, with draging and droping the resources from one file to the other. Like for example category "AVI" on the old one to the new one. The problem is when I make that with "Icon" there are formats not matching, like for example icon number 1 has only 6 format wich the bigger one is only 48x48 8bits and I have in icon 1 in my old shell32.dll 8 formats and the biggest is 128x128 32bits. Can somebody please help me

That sucks man, i know. There's two options: 1. Is to use ResHack to modify your icon resources directly (those not matching, by deleting extra icons). 2. Use ResHack to export icons and modify them with IconWorkshop to delete extra icons and then repack them.

That's right, there are 4 "brand new" security updates on WindowsUpdate. And I updated my XP yesterday, indeed, the shell32.dll is replaced to M$'s version. Fortunately I have my shell32's resources (.ico, .bmp, .avi) stored, after the update, I start replacing the resources (.bmp, .avi first, by using ResHacker, .ico later, by using Microangelo). Within 20mins, the folders turns aqua again.

So, be prepared! Before you Update your Windows...Who knows which file will be switched back next time. :rant:

No more updates from Microsoft for me, thanks. I have plenty of security with firewalls etc. And if my system does get hacked I'll just fix it or reinstall windows. Easy for me to do since I have xp with sp1 already in it. I say get a good firewall and keep it updated and hell with M$ft!
