At Ease

Hey everybody, I have a question for you guys. I recently got a very old mac from a school yardsale/fair thing. It is so old, it only has a floppy drive. It is an LC 550. It boots up fine, but then I'm stuck in this At Ease program. I cant get out of it without a password. :nuts:

Also, another mac (the LC 575) has a cdrom drive, but it wont boot. It seems to have a problem with its harddrive. It did come with a cd that says "Apple Macintosh CD includes system software and other programs"

Anyone have an idea what to do. I'd prefer to get the 550 working, but any help would be very helpful.

Do this:

1) Take the hard drive out of the LC 550.

2) Remove the hard drive from the LC 575, and replace it with the hard drive from the LC 550.

3)Put your Apple System Software CD into the drive tray.

4) Boot from the CD. To do this, hold down the 'C' key while the Mac boots up.

5) Install the System Software over the current software on the hard drive. This will overwrite everything on the drive, which should get rid of that nasty 'At Ease' program (since this is the hard drive from the LC 550)

That should do it! Provided the LC 575 works fine and it was just the old hard drive giving you problems, you should have a working CPU. This should work fine, I've made several working Macs from the parts of older ones, so I have experience with what you're dealing with- it can be quite annoying! I know you wanted to try to use the 550, but believe me, you'll want the 575 for the CD drive alone! Good luck!

sorry I'm replying to this so late, but I sorta forgot about this thread :order: . Anyway, I tried that, but the hard drives have different plugs where they connect to the machine. Right now I'm trying to transfer the 7.5 OS to 8 FLOPPIES!! and try that on the 550. For the 575, I dont quite know what to do yet.

EDIT: Oh yea, the reason the 575 wouldnt boot was because it didnt have a hard drive. hey, it was free.
