Broken Harddisk... Or still rescueable?

So here's the deal:

I have had this Samsung spinpoint for a while. It's a SATA drive, and worked fine for me, except for the loud noises it makes when working.

I've been told this is abnormal for Spinpoint drives, but it's not my main issue.

A short while ago, I put a new Power Supply inside my pc, hoping it would be more quite than the last one (which should be quite since it's "temperature controlled", but reall is loud).

This new Power Supply had no SATA power cable on it. But, luckily, my mainboard supplied me a Legacy to SATA converer cable (basically just twisted the 12v and the 5v cable).

Thing is, I think I accidentally put this converter cable on the wrong way.

This way, the 12v cable lead to the point where the 5v cable should go and the 5v cable went to the point where the 12v cable should have went.

Can this kill a hard drive?

I thought about for a while, and I think they would be as smart as to put some kind of fail safe in it.

Sadly, I could well be wrong.

So what I´ve got now, is a "cold" Samsung Spinpoint that won't budge. No heat coming off it, or anything.

It had VERY valueable data on it for me, if anybody has any info, please share it.

If the legacy to sata converter just plugs into a molex socket (4 pin), then there isn't any other way to plug it in, it only goes in one way due to the shape it has. That's kinda the fail-safe. I've worked with Samsung Spinpoints and I can only confirm that they are pretty silent, even when accessing data , so it making loud noises should be your first clue as to why it died. If the failure is mechanical (failed fluid-bearing, or other) , Just find a working spinpoint, same model, transfer the platters (VERY carefully) and you should be able to access the data.

If you had valuable data on it take it to a computer shop that offers data rescue and don't try do it yourself.

As Vale said - you shouldn't be able to plug the cable in the wrong way, but who knows who created this converter. Putting twice the voltage on one pin willl definitly kill the disk I believe. Actually it kills the controlling parts the data stays intact.
