Fonts in Thunderbird

Ok, in Thunderbird, I have fonts so the message is in Arial. But when I send a message, the other person recieves the email with the Times New Roman font at like size 5. But then when I recieve an email in Thunderbird, the font is Times New Roman, but when I view the same message on my Gmail, it is Arial. Can I make it so the message I type in Arial is recieved as Arial, and the emails I recieve in Arial are viewed in Thunderbird as Arial?
