Overlay Quits Working After Installing a New Card?

Not sure if this particular thing belongs here, as it happened after installing hardware, however, I know for a fact this is a smelly software problem.

I put in a new ATI RADEON 9250 card and it works like a charm. Except for one thing-overlays. After I put in the new card, overlays are only coming up as black screens. Which sucks.

Funny thing is, it's not the hardware.

It's only acting this way under my account. I tried it in another account (one I have for maintennance that doesn't have much starting up with it) and it's just fine. Nor does VLC skip like a nut, something it has been doing in, again, only MY account since the installation of a new motherboard.

Overlay off-video is fine (sans the skippage)

Overlay on-black screen.

When I am in the other account and "run as" under my name, it's also just fine.

And the best part-except for the overlay being black in fullscreen, the TV tuner display is just fine and isn't skipping.

I've been Googling like mad trying to find out what the heck is wrong, and have found NOTHING. Can someone help me here?

And before you say 'just make a new account', there's way too many settings and things to have to import and go through for that noise.

If there's another way I can fix this turmoil, please tell me.

Try uninstalling the ATI Control Panel software and reinstalling it.

I tried it, no dice. Just like this thing ate my post so I have to rewrite it.

I tried closing everything that wasn't critical one by one to see if one of my startup items is having an issue, but to no avail. But I haven't quite gotten the chance to try and close EVERYTHING.

Also, another odd bit in this-RealPlayer and ATI MMC are fine as long as they are windowed. You try to go fullscreen, it goes black.

It's pretty silly that I can have my TV semi-transparent and fullscreen but not simply fullscreen.

I added in some new info. Maybe now someone can help me out.

Install the latest version of Direct X (9.0c). Some cards need it to function. Also, try changing settings in the ATI control panel for vertical sync, antialiasing (turn off. don't leave at application preference). Make sure you've installed the drivers for the motherboard and the video card.

okay...first of all u should give out some info of what u're using:

Driver

monitor's size

windows which version u're using

like i see here:

http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...uestionID=22264

this is wat u should be using [ATI 9250 series driver]

check ur hardware make sure u had it installed properly, then maybe someone will happily to help u out

Okay, it's a Sapphire ATI 9250, and it's using the driver on the bundled CD.

It's running at 1024 x 768, with antialiasing off, on an HP vs17e monitor.

I'm also running XP.

I've quadruple-checked the hardware and the drivers and the software. It's ALL installed properly.

It's also running DirectX 9.0c as I've just confirmed.

Motherboard drivers are installed as well.

I'll check into that vertical sync thing, but other than that I've tried everything else.

Actually, the fact that it works in one account means it probably isn't hardware, but is due to different settings in both accounts. Make sure your display property settings are identical in both accounts (write them down if u have to), like color depth, fast writes, etc.

Disable all programs in your startup folder and those that start at logon (using a startup manager) and logoff then log on again. Add them back one by one logging off and on in between until you find the app causing the problem.

Check settings for hydravision between both accounts if you're using it. Disable all skinning programs like windowblinds, styler, yz toolbar, etc and see if one of those is causing the problem through trial and error.

Sorry if I am stating the obvious....good luck!!!

Did that already to some extent, but I'll give it another try.

Display settings are identical in both accounts as far as I've seen, and I don't use Hydravision.

Plus, WindowBlinds is on in both accounts with no problem.

What I'm thinking at this point is perhaps I should point a finger at WindowFX, seeing as it does use hardware acceleration.

But I'll check into it later and tell you what I find.

I tried killing off all the startup apps. No joy.

I have a final idea that probably won't work, but in the midst of my iTunes mess did work. Something I'll just call "shake back into shape".

Remember when I had that streaking mess happening in iTunes?

Well, in the midst of me going back and forth between versions and trying to save my EQ, the streaking problem finally died.

So what I plan on doing, while it is strange, just might get the overlay back at least, since that was working until I put this card in.

I'll replace the new card with the old one, go into a few apps, see if the overlay works, dig around a bit for setting variations, then slap the new one back in and see if it works then.

Because, for a time (just like iTunes with the streak glitch), the overlay WAS working. Then I guess I resized the TV tuner wndow too much and it died within minutes after one of the resizes (don't ask me why I did that).

While it probably won't fix the skipping video or the buggy recording, this equivalent to banging on the side of the TV might at least let me watch TV in fullscreen again, so I don't have to go into another account just to watch TV fullscreen, much less a DVD.
