Apple expensive? I don't think so...

... and here's the reason why.

There are three departments in computer hardware: for home use, office use and on the go. Apple offers the iMac and Mac Mini; Mac Pro; and MacBook and MacBook Pro respectively for the three departments. In this little article, I will justify the price of the Apple 17-inch iMac in comparison to a self assembled PC with similar specs and try to make you, a prospective buyer, see the competitiveness of Apple’s pricing. Read on to see how things are not always as transparent as they might seem!

You don't have enough sources to back up your claim.

Well written from a journalistic sense, but lacking any real data to backup your claim.

Also, compare product for product. Apples are an off the shelf computer.

Compare it to other equaly equiped, off the shelf PC's like HP or Dell. You will find that Apple is still more expensive.

Build quality can play into the equasion, but even Apple has been known to make a lemon from time to time.

Still very one sided and closed minded approach.

I agree... Apple Laptops are a great value and the Windows laptop market sucks from a cost perspective. Grossly overpriced.

But you still have failed to prove the iMac to PC point. The PC will still win on the $$$ to performance ratio as it relates to hardware when compared with Apple hardware.

Throwing the OS into the picture is irrelevant as both pre-built systems would include an OS.

At that point it becomes a matter of preference, not a matter of fact.

So that point is moot.

Again... loose the fanboy approach. "other stupid usability flaws" come on.. you can describe that issue very professionaly without using the word "stupid"... shows a lack of imagination.

And the "Genuine Windows Validation checks" is a good thing.

If you have a legal copy with a legit key, it should not be an issue... it isn't for me.

There have been many reports of the validation application, installed through Windows Automatic Updates, wrongly declaring fully legitimate Windows licenses as non-genuine. It has been such a major irritant that it was officially declared spyware. There are better approaches to prevent piracy. Installing validation software through the backdoor disguised as a 'critical' update which monitors the user's system and sends information back to Microsoft is not the most appropriate solution.

It monitors nothing... The application looks at the product key entry in the registry and compares it to a list of bad keys... it reports NOTHING back to M$. If it finds a bad key, it disbales certain features in Windows.

We had to sniff the process for security reasons here at work and found that it didn't send any data out. We even tested it on systems with known bad keys... again, nothing went out.

And the update was never disguised at all... it clearly stated what it was and you can choose not to install it. Certain updates would fail to install if the validation tool was not installed, but again, that is your choice.

There is no conspiracy behind the tool to gather info and send it back to M$.

Take the foil off of your head.

Now... was it a poorly designed tool.... well the fact that legitimate copies of Windows got declared as bad should answer that question. We have to give them at least a few tries before they get it right.

The manner in which they set it out was a mistake and they have admitted it. However, that occured for a very brief period & not everyone downloaded it. Some of us actually read what the updates are. ;

If you download updates without verifying or checking what they are (no matter what OS) then you have a problem.

Really I can't say your articles even have a true journalistic feel to them, more of a tabloid style in terms of limited facts but, that also depends on who the article is targeted too. If it's a basic or limited computer user than I'm sure they'll be entertaine but the more knowledgeable techie wants some meat in their sandwich.

Hardware wise- sometimes more expensive, sometimes cheaper... Apple argues that its new Mac Pro is cheaper than an equally equipped Dell. But then again 'HOMEBREW' computers will always be cheaper...

i think if you put two equally equipped configs together (made by companies), Mac would be more expensive, but in my opinion you get what you pay software wise (OPINION).

So comes the arguement, how much is OSX worth?... do you put Windows on the Mac using bootcamp, to make it more 'equal' (add $200 for a legit copy)... and then again, isnt AMD dualcore cheaper than intel? (another spanner in the works- Apple only uses intel)

Most other PC laptop configs to get exactly what I wanted were more expensive than my macbook pro... but thats just because im fussy on all the details; specs, appearance, peripherals, add ons (webcam) etc...

...its 25% fact, the rest is opinion.
