Cheapest 1 GB (2 x 512) for MacBook?

I'm looking to add more RAM to my MacBook. Where is the current cheapest place to buy 1 GB (2 x 512) RAM? I see NewEgg has this BUFFALO Select RAM 512 RAM for $45.99, so two of those plus tax and shipping would come to $104.94. Know of any place that can beat this? I know RAM prices are on the rise, would it be better for me to just wait? There used to be RAM on sale at NewEgg where I could get 1 GB (2 x 512) for about $84 shipped, but they ran out of stock awhile ago when I didn't have enough money to buy.

What kind of memory does a MacBook use? SoDimm DDR-2 I guess? If so you can just check ebay, they usually have good deals, because people like to get rid of there 512MB-Ram sticks.

The MacBook uses DDR2 667 PC2-5300. Yeah I've been looking on eBay. Not much cheaper though. Now I'm starting to think I should get 2 GB (2 x 1 GB).

Looking at the reviews for their 1 GB stick, a lot of people with Macs say it runs great.

Well I splurged and went for the 2 GB. I found a sweet deal on eBay... 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) DDR2 667 PC2-5400 of Samsung RAM new for $159.98 shipped. Current cheapest 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) at NewEgg goes for $220 shipped + tax.

I bought it from this guy, keep an eye on him, he has good prices for RAM if anyone else is looking to buy.

I just got them today. They work great, except they seem to be running at 533 MHz instead of 667 MHz for some reason. Still trying to find out exactly why. Here's what I posted on another forum...

I bought RAM on eBay for my MacBook advertised as 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) of Samsung DDR2 667 PC2-5400 RAM. I installed it and it works, yet looking at About This Mac and System Profiler, it appears to be running at 533 and not 667. I tried each stick individually, and also combined with the stock MacBook RAM, yet it still reads as 533. I know it sounds bad since I got the RAM on eBay, but say it really is 667 RAM. Is there anything I could do get it running at 667 and not 533? Some setting I could change? Any program I could use to identify the RAM and speeds?

I just got a MacBook Pro with 2GB RAM installed, and it has the random shutdown problem described by many other users. I tested both RAM chips individually and the factory fitted chip runs at 667 MHz while the other fitted by the Apple reseller only runs at 533 MHz. No wonder there are problems when both are fitted!!! Both chips are labelled as 1GB DDR2 PC5300 667MHz. The problem chip is Samsung RAM from First Choice Memory. Hope this helps anyone else having similar problems.

Even if it is 533 RAM, I read there's only like 1% performance difference from 533 and 667. Should I just keep it? After all, I only paid $160 for them.

I think you should keep them. I suffered a similar "hit" (if you can call it that) when installing another GB of RAM on my Mac Pro. I got 2x512 Kingston FDIMMS from NewEgg for about $190 total. After installing them, I got knocked down to 533, but I would hardly say it's a performance hit. I got what I expected- a zippier system with increased stability. Before installing the extra RAM, I could only open one CS2 app at a time, or else they'd crash. Now I can run as many as I like, and my system as a whole is better than before.

I'd say as long as you're not experiencing things like kernel panics, keep the RAM. Personally, I'd rather have more RAM at a slightly slower speed than less RAM at a slightly faster speed.
