I've got a load of .avi files compressed using xvid and divx and would like to be able to add them to my iTunes video library. I read about using reference files to get the files into iTunes, but obviously, if quicktime can't play the files they won't work.
Is it possible to get quicktime (pro) to play these files? I have the codecs that allow me to play all the files in WMP.
Short answer... no.
Not without converting the videos first.
Convert them to mpeg format. A, they will be smaller in size and B, they will play in QT.
ok, thanks. Whats the best quality mpg that will play in quicktime? I'm pretty sure that I've got a couple of mpgs that won't play in QT, so they must be a different form of mpg.

They can and definitely will play in QuickTime, just download the DivX codec. I also recommend Flip4Mac to handle WMV files in QuickTime. As for iTunes, the videos will not show up/play in iTunes natively, but yes you can use the reference file trick.
Goes to show you how much I keep up with QT DivX codecs. They didn't exist all that long ago.
I gave up on QT ages ago because it wouldn't play jack.
I'll stick with WMP... so far it plays pretty much anything I throw at it excpet .mov of course.

Yeah I kind of forgot about Windows now that I have my Mac. If I were on Windows I use WMP to play videos. QuickTime on the Mac is 100 times better than on the PC. The only thing that bothers me, and Apple really needs to add as it wouldn't be hard, is a simple playlist ability. I just want to be able to tell it to play a bunch of video files without having to open up each one when the next one is finished.
VLC media player plays 'm all, even .mov , except Real-media. Check it out for yourself. Why have 1 media player for each separate format, when you can have 1 player for them all is what I say. Lack of a playlist is also what bothered me the most about Quicktime. It doesn't matter that it's 100 times better on the Mac than on the pc, I still switched to VLC as soon as I got my Mac;)
VLC is nice.. but I still haven't came across anything that would separate me from Media Player Classic (gabest), just small, simple and straightforward media player.

Perian codecs are very nice. I replaced DivX/xvid plugins combo with this pack and it plays everything so far.
