iTunes doesn't update id3 tags

Edit: this may have been premature. I've tried since then and it appears to work fine (except for the multiple file artwork issue)

I just noticed that iTunes doesn't update id3 tags anymore. It appears to store any added information in its database but leaves the file alone. I used to do a lot of tagging with itunes, especially artwork by selecting and pasting. Now you can only drag artwork on a single file unless you show infor for multiple files and drag ot paste artwork on the artwork field. It doesn't get added to the file anyway so you may as well do it with MP3Tag.

On a good note, it now allows you to drag files outside of itunes so I can drag music onto my Muvo icon or an explorer window.

i noticed this earlier, i downloaded itunes 7 and got an apple account just to get artwork for some albums, and come to find out it doesnt embed the image in the mp3 as it should, it uses some kind of itunes only file so when i went back to itunes 6 all that album artwork was gone.

It's not just artwork. It's anything you add to the tags. :mad:

does this only go for itunes 7 or is it the same with 6 too? I`ve just finished adding covers to my mp3 and it would be nice to save it into the mp3-files and not only the itunes-files?

i guess i still dont see the good reason? because the albums that i already had art embedded into still work perfectly fine with the coverflow port in itunes7, no need for itunes only files.

@eMOTIVe: as far as i can tell itunes 6 does save it in the file itself.

yes they purchased coverflow and integrated it into the new itunes 7. thats what the album browser is.

Darn it, I was under the impression the new Album Art would be embedded into the files themselves. If not, what's the point? My music collection just became a lot more dependent on iTunes .

Okay, people are misunderstanding me, so I'll elaborate:

iTunes 7 now stores album art in a custom database file instead of ID3 tags for purposes of CoverFlow, that shiny new album art browser. Now, if you have your album art embedded in ID3 tags, you'll notice that when you use CoverFlow, it doesn't load everything instantly--it has to open the ID3 tags, read the album art, then display it. This takes a noticable length of time. So Apple changed how downloaded cover art is stored, because it's much faster to read from that database file than it is to read from every single mp3's ID3 tag.

From what I can tell, you can still embed album art to ID3 tags in iTunes by manually editing the relevant mp3s' tags. It's just that art downloaded from the iTunes Store will be saved in a database file.

Hmmm... I'm getting some conflicting results now. Maybe I was wrong.

The bug for adding artwork to multiple items is still there, however. You have to do it in the Get Info field.

Oh, alright. So if I copied artwork from say, Amazon.com, into the Artwork field on the Get Info dialog, then it'll be embedded as an ID3 tag?

You can copy downloaded album art (right click art pane). So if you then paste this in the tag window like usual will it be saved to the ID3 tags?

Yes, but you can't paste to multiple files at a time.

I just checked, and it appears that MP3Tag isn't reading the tags that iTunes is writing. I'm using a beta version so maybe that's the problem.

Edit: the tags don't show up in Windows Explorer property page either. Hmmmmm....

Well, for some reason you advised to paste the picture to the desktop and you didn't specify to Get Info on the songs ( dragging/pasting onto the art pane doesn't work for multiple files). Regardless, I said what had to be done in the OP so it's all redundant.

... Yeah. Paste the image to the desktop. Group-select the files. Open their properties. Double-click the art pane. Browse to the desktop. Select the saved image art.
