Yes, it might work for one person... but the reason these schemes are popular is that they can estimate pretty accurately how many laptops they are ever going to give away. It's simple if you think about it. One laptop for every 11 people. However, if is for 11 different people. Therefore, as more people sign up, the chances of each person getting a laptop are less likely even though the company is on the whole being exposed to more people. This is because, practically, the number of people targeted by this offer is finite (people familiar with the internet, willing to give away some details about themselves, and looking for a free piece of apple hardware), this limits the number of computers they are likely to give away.

Also, the numbers become very big, very quickly. After giving away one MacBook, they have 12 people (Starter + 11 referrals). If those 11 new people each find 11 referals, then the company has given out 12 MacBooks all together, and has now reached 133 people. Now, if all 121 new people want a Mac Book, you would need another 1,331 people to add on to the existing 133 giving 1,464 that the company has reached just before it has to give out it's next "tier" of macbooks. Now think about how many people you need if the next 1,331 who just signed up want a MacBook... 14,641 different people. Say the number of people willing to take part in this offer is 50,000. The company can probably reach 50,000 people without giving away 1,500 laptops, or even much less. Add onto this the fact that people tend to share information on this kind of offer with people with familiar interests, makes it even less likely that a laptop will be given away and. Also having many people doing it simultaneously means there are more likely to be "conflicts" i.e. 2 different people were hoping that the same person would be a referral for them.

Might be a few errors in my maths, but in essence it's the pyramid effect that is important. You are getting the market to do your marketing for you.

i stupidly did it, and you end up having to spend money, just with different people, and you cant do it w/o spending $$$. I am still trying to unsubscribe from RealPlayer GoldPass or whatever it is.

Again, like CDi2 said, it is just a fancy Pyramid scheme, that doesnt work.

Besides, half the time, the people who you send these emails to dont do it, so you get the rep. as a spamer.
