My Internet Can't Connect! :(

My laptop has been plagued with problems lately! I cant connect to any webpages

This has been going on for a while, and I know that it isnt a problem with my internet connection because Automatic Update and Norton LiveUpdate still do connect and download. But whenever I try to access the iTunes music store it says the server cant be contacted, and when I try to access a webpage on any browser it comes up with the message you get when you are not connected to the internet.

This started when I updated Mozzilla Firefox, at first it was just firefox that didnt work. Afterwords, I updated IE 7 Beta 2 to Beta 3 and everything stopped workin, IE, MSN Explorer, iTunes Music Store etc....

When I diagnose connection problems it says that my server cant access http, https, or ftp servers or something like that...

Anyone have any ideas abnout what I can do? I have re-updated to IE RC1 but that didnt do anything either.

u could try: control panel/ open up your network connection/ right click on your Local Area Connection/ Select repair.

If that don't work: Unplug all your Network connection's power cord....Wait for 1 minute then repower them all.

Others then that still don't work better idea: contact your Network admistrator i'm sure they can solve that for u

#417497

i know you probably did, but since you use mozilla you may have overlooked it,

make sure ie isnt set to "work offline"

#417514

have u tried to reset your ie default connection?

#417526

yeah, i have tried all those things... anything I can do before i contact network administrator? I wanna try fix this by myself..

its all browsers, not just one specifically.

thanks for your help so far... any further solutions will be much appreciated.

#417557

maybe the admin restricted your access....?

#417580

the only ppl on my network are me and my dad.

he hasnt done anything :P

#417606

Hehe you mean you and your dad?

(Sorry I know him, he's 12)

And to stop any further rebbuttles... I'm 13. :P

Maybe you can trash the PC and get a mac eh?

EDIT:

Well maybe google it.

Thats how we found out how to find WEP keys on a PC and whatnot.

But knowing you you've already tried :P

#417607

Maybe you can post a relevant comment.

Keep it on topic.

#417608

speaking of which.. SOMEONE PLEASE?

I beg of you guys! i really need this.

#417613

If you really wanna solve it yourself, then reformat it :-)

back up those u really want to reuse!

#417754

yeah, I could, except I am pretty sure there is some way to fix it without reformating, its just some setting that got messed up.. I hope

#417782

google WinSockFix.exe and run it. when its done if it doesnt ask you to restart, restart anyway. that should take care of it. also check for virii and spyware.

I did that, but nothing happened!

If you're running through a firewall, try disabling it. Also, try doing a direct connection to your modem/router instead of using the wireless.

-NC

#418194

that wont work, because certain things do work, which means it isn't a problem with the connection. For example, I can connect to skype but not iTunes music store.

#418301

It still might work ;). Those softwares connect through different ports, some of which might be blocked. Try directly connecting your laptop with the modem.

The only problem is that the thing I am trying to fix is my wireless. I have my desktop to connect to the internet with currently

#418526

Hmmm,

I say contact microsoft via email and ask them how to do it.

There has to be at least ONE competent person in the microsoft help center!

#419022

i tried calling them! I spoke to a machine for half an hour...

i got so pissed off at microsoft! I will try emailing them however.

Try doing a system restore to your computer. boot into safe mode and then go to start, accessories, system tools, system restore. This will generate to the old settings that you used before. Probably you screwed a system32 file so just use this ;)

#419862

i know this sounds noobish, but I wanna be sure... how to you boot into safe mode?

#419875

Check whether you have proxies on..or even firewalls .. in your ie,ff.. even msngr..check their settings..may be unnistall them and re-install..

if formatting aint your choice.

Unfortunatly it was a virus. I had to clear out my hard drive :(

I am now posting from my... LAPTOP

Unfortunatly I lost ass my files, since by the time I realised it was a virus, it was so buggered I could not move ANY of my files..

This is my first virus, until now I thought the PC virus thing was exaggerated.. guess not.

#420357

Well, actually, it IS exaggerated...you just never know when one might come along, though, so you take a few precautions and use common sense.

However, while I have never had an actual virus, I have encountered a few worms and a few bits of malware in my computer experience. I've hit no viruses and very little spyware in my computer since my last wipe of the drive. It's been protected by only Windows Sh*twall...erm...FIREWALL...and Avast.

All the firewalls, bogging antivirus apps, and antispyware apps in the world can't save you from common stupidity. It's like wearing a fume mask and gloves and spraying everything down with Lysol to avoid catching a virus (the cold, for example) but eating food right after someone with a cold sneezed on it.

I'd compare getting a virus to getting picked for jury duty, actually...you never know when you'll get it and it likes to come when you least want or expect it. Luck of the draw, in other words.
