Aqua-Soft ForumsI'm considering painting an Apple on the lid of my boring Acer Aspire 5100. But, then, I thought to my self, "Why stop there? Why not go ahead and Clear Coat the lid to resemble the reflective surface of a MacBook?". So, I was wondering, if I were to only paint a Black Apple logo on the lid of my laptop, then cover it with about 5 or 6 coats of Clear Coat, and leave the computer in tact, how long would I not be able to use it?

I want to paint it because it would add some flare to it, make it mine.
Simply put, I want to paint it for the same reason most Windows users emulate Mac OS X.

my dad painted mine. now my laptop has a chameleon paint job.. it looks great..

I'm not sure if I know quite what you are saying. Are you suggesting not to paint the Apple Logo? Or not to do the clear coat?
Also, what is the best way to make custom stencils?

The best way to create a custom stencil is to get some of this sticker-like foil and some masking tape:
You leave the foil intact - cut your stencil.
Then you put the masking tape on top.
Then you peel of the back of the sticker-foil and put it on the object.
Now you peel of the masking tape.

Then, to take it a step further, I planned to give the whole lid a couple of clear coats so that it has that nice shine to it.
think of it like this, if you do paint your computer, it may just void your warrenty ....

If you make the stencil too thick it is likely that the material you are using isn't going to create a tight enough seal with the laptop, so the paint might leak, which will just look really bad.

Cardstock is a bit thicker than Paper. Think of greeting cards.
Also, the laptop has two differnt types of surfaces on the lid, would that effect the clear coat?

for gloss you could use clingfilm. i got a feeling it'd end up lookin real cheap either way.
Since I'm only painting a small area (at the moment), should I use primer?
um if your just painting an apple logo on there and you dont have mac osx running on there....to me thats a bit dorky....personally id only use primer if i were painting the whole thing.....i dont like the idea of the apple logo on there as it would look cheap if you botch it....what colour is ure laptop? and upload a pic of ure one (different angles for before and after shots)

Actually, I am thinking of trying this too, because by now you can see my Laptop is USED :-D Are there instructions somewhere how to take a spefic Laptop (TravelMate 4000) apart?
