Does anyone have any thoughts on this, I'm assuming the linux users are pro-open source. I however, am quite against it, I don't think that open source is a good idea, it removes a degree of originality and opens the door to copy cat clones of a lot of programs.
I have more, but I'd like to see what others are saying.
Open Source is the best thing to happen to computers. It will and is saving this industry from complete destruction.

It can lead to clones of an applicaitons as you say, that is true but what is true also is that it can lead to a big number of improvements to an application made by contributions by people, giving benefits to all users.
I think that most people that use open source dont care for originality but for benefit for all and improvement.

why does it remove originality? no-one is stopping anyone making their own programs.
why are clones bad? just choose the program that suits you best.
apart from that i can't think of an example of hundreds of clones. Please enlighten us.
Why does it remove originality? Because people have a tendancy to take the easy way out, I don't care if you say they don't and truly believe it this is a fact of life. Going on with this if something can be duplicated and modded slightly to suit the interest of the user isn't that just plagerism of a different sort. Sure it gives the community a better product, but at the same time the author of the original work loses his/her original satisfaction that they had with their original idea. It is more satisfying for them to edit and develop their program their way.
Why are clones bad? Not programs that do the same thing, those can be fine a concept can be copied thats not an issue, what is an issue is when every aspect of the thing is copied and duplicated with a different GUI to make it seem different, that I don't like.
Oh and your last sentence doesn't seem to make too much sense to me so I'll just leave it as it is.
The GPL is about the bettering of the community, not the bettering of one company or person.
Its like the difference between Communism and Capitalism. Very different belief structures. (Im not saying communism is better, or anything to that nature though, just that they are very different ideological structures).
But im not getting into this arguement. Anyone who can't see the advantages of the GPL, never will.
I'm not saying I can't see the advantages, I'm saying that the disadvantages out weigh them at least for me.
What disadvantages?
Openness. Freedom.
Nobody forces you to use the GPL, so how could it be "bad".
Its not the liscences fault if something is a clone or not. The reason there are many clones out there is because there are a lot of good commercial products out there, mostly because of a head start and more R&D money.
BUT, some of the best products out there are origional, and open source.
Apache
Mozilla
SQL
VNC
And many more. All of these are products commercial companies try to copy.
