Itunes music or/and my music folder?

If you download music and save it to my music folder and then drag it to itunes. Is there a step to skip in this? I mean do u have to save it to my music folder, or not? to save space can you just save it to itunes music? Can you delete all of the music in my music folder and still have music in itunes work?

This maybe has been discussed before, but I could not find that thread. I need to get this straight now. Please help.

Are you talking about the iTunes music folder? or the iTunes library?

In order for the library to function you must have the virtual files somewhere in your HD there isn't any other way

You can put your music in another folder, not the My Music folder, and iTunes still plays 'em
