900mhz G3 Vs 867mhz G4

Which is faster?

depenst on what you need it for...

the usual programs like safari and email finder the same

but if you use photoshop and other altivec programs the G4 will be faster

thats what i thought too, but my friend moved from a G3 to a G4 and said there is a noticable difference

@nate: i assume your comparing the iBook to either the powerbook, iMac, or eMac. Taha can tell you the awesome-ness of the iBook, but if you can shell out a few more dollars, a Powerbook or iMac would be better.

for a laptop, go for the iBook. For one thing, the 900 MHz model has magical performance. I don't know why, but I guess its just a sweet spot. Also, G3's are cool, so you will have longer battery life.

In day to day operations, a G3 is actually as fast as a G4 of similar speed (I always liked IBM more than Motorolla anyways ). In some tasks, it is actually faster. But if you will be working alot with FCP, PS7, Shake, Maya or similar apps, don't even CONSIDER the G3 (iBook).

For a desktop, its a no-brainer: G4

edit: But if you have the exrta cash, or just can't resist the sleek alunimum body, by all means go with the Powerbook!

I want to buy they 900MHz iBook, but I wsa wondering if it is worth waiting for panther or just to go get it now. Also, can it run games ok? I don't want it just for that but I need entertainment sometimes.

Wait for Panther, you'll get a cheaper iBook, and you won't have to pay the extra $130.

Ive noticed a huge diff between my 1ghz eMac and a relative's 500 mghz G3 iMac. But, as stated previously, it all depends what you want it for.

Dont be an idiot an think of only speed.. the iBook has no PCMCIA or whatever card slot, No airport extreme, out dated video card.. etc. While the Powerbook does not.

thats right. You have to choose the one that meets your need.

outdated gfx card? Lotsa Sony Vaios, and most low-end to medium-priced PC notebooks have only 16MB gfx cards. the 12" Apple notebooks have 32MB..

Taha we arn't talking about PC's now are we? I own an iBook 800 12", only because money limited me to it. Dont hurry yourself to get a mac, Save your money and wait for panther.. Then buy a PowerBook.

well, you said it has an outdated gfx card.

But it doesn't - sure its not the latest or anythingm but its better than MOST laptops' gfx card. Its not GREAT, but you make it sound like its below average - which it isn't.

Also, I got a job SOLELY to get a Mac (remember my Tim Hortons job, everybody? >.<) I raised enough money to get even the top-end Mac at that time. Personally, I got the iBook for 3 reasons: 1) price:performance ratio was good, 2) It was enough for my needs, 3) I like the iBook best aesthetics-wise.

If I could get my money back and buy any laptop I could, I believe I would still go for the iBook. Why? Because it fits my needs perfectly (for University, for the occasional game, browsing, web design, PS, music). It may not be the fastest thing in the world, but its more than enough for me.
