why i think i might be be ditching pc's for good...

so, the mobo on my home pc died and i've been using my g4 exclusively. okay, no big whoop. but here's the real story...

at work, i do desktop support and network administration for about 50 pc's and 10 servers. we got a contractor in doing some filemaker stuff for us. yesterday, he stops me in the hall to make sure that both lan ports in his office will remain live and accessible (we're recarpeting/repainting the whole place). so, i'm like, 'but, you just have the one pc.' and he goes, 'yeah, but i bring in my laptop sometimes.' and i'm like, 'whoa!! nobody puts their personal laptop on my network without running it by me first!' and he's like, 'oh, i'm sorry. if it makes a difference, it's a mac.' and i go, 'oh, well, then nevermind. connect away!'

of course, i might be being a bit nonchalant about this, as a mac might not get infected but can be a carrier. but still, i think it's pretty indicative of the climate right now.

windows= caution, caution!!

mac= go to town, buddy!

as i work at a university, i can get the 20" imac for $1399. hmmm...which credit card to use...?

Am I the only one who doesn't get viruses up their system's rear? Seriously it isn't that hard, hence the "caution!" doesn't apply to meh :P

No, I use Windows exclusively since 3.1 to XP and have never caught a virus either. I had one case of adware which I removed successfully with a little bit of creative thinking but that's about it. I think it's just the bad reputation coming from malware made specifically for Windows machines.

Can i just make one point here, while your story is heartwarming that the mac is so very safe, the reality is, it isnt, i mean just a few days ago Apple released 26 security updates, and at Defcon they had their Wireless drivers pulled apart to run arbitrary code on a system (works with third party drivers too though so not all apples fault here) however the fact of the matter is this.

Windows is the planets number one operating system, i dont care by what tactics it got that position, but its there, and as a result, hackers target it, the same as if every financial institution ran OSX then that would be targeted, its because Apple doesnt have a market share, that they are not constantly plagued by security issues.

Have no fear though, there will come a time when Apple and Linux will be targeted, i like the mac for its capability, design and ease of use, not its security track record, because that can all change overnight.

Windows sucks

as long as thier is a risk, thier is an annoyance.

It means skirting around add sites, and various other sites if you are that way inclined (dirty people you are)

Ohh and It means keeping your PC up to date with automatic updates "bandaid fixes", and just be sure that Microsoft doesnt infect your computer with "Windows Genuine Advantage" spyware in the process.

Ohh and it means installing a decent self updating firewall that takes up system resources.

Ohh and it means installing some antivirus software such as AVG free, which is good at the moment, but still takes up system resources (3 months later you will need to find another program)

Ohh and it means you will need be hounded by the system tray non-stop to install all these freakin updates for all three programs...

what with all that anti-virus, firewall and automatic updates using my system resources and hounding me non-stop i think i'd prefer to just get a virus/spyware which does the same thing!

Ohh or you could just get a mac, and not have to worry. . .

ok well i will admit, i do run software update once a week/month, but i feel safe in Apple's hands, knowing they are on top of things, and that my security isnt handled by a thousand different companies. I'm yet to get a virus on a mac, or be hounded by something virus related such as a firewall, anti-virus program or updates... or windows genuine advantage for that matter.

Mac's have thier security flaws, but at least they are fixed properly, with little attention spent by the user.

-thats my spin.

You are shirking your responsibility for maintaining your network's security by passing off a machine simply because it is a Macintosh. Personal laptops, regardless of them being PCs or Macs should be checked thoroughly before being allowed into a corporate network.

I can't believe you could be so careless as a network admin.

@AJR1: Agree with you 100% my friend.

Thats true, even I believe that a mac should be scanned before going onto a corporate network, just as a precaution as thier is a lot of important data. if it was just a small home network, i wouldn't think twice if my friend bought along his mac.

i've never seen a mac virus wreck any havoc yet... nor have i ever seen one... or heard of one for that matter.

Seriously, i think i'm going to start a new thread for interests sake called "have you ever got a mac virus?" and ask them "if so, what did it do? how did it do it? what fixed it?"

... would be interesting, but it may not reap many comments... funny that isnt it?
