While trawling through various design sites, I realised that it would be really tedious to update the portfolio/content regularly if editing by hand.

Hence I was wondering if there was something like a CMS where I can update my website, while retaining the look. What do I mean? If you look at the conventional CMS like PHP-Nuke or Postnuke, the layout is pretty much fixed. They are customizable (as far as I know).

I'm interested in using Wordpress, firstly because its the one that I have the most experience in, and secondly it seems possible.

Any ideas? =)

You could always get someone to make one for you, these are done by wellington artists, where I come from in New Zealand. Some of the coolest design websites I think...

Otherwise wordpress is a viable option. You can use plugins to update files and things that people can download. There are zip plugins and photo plugins, this im sure you already know.

I love and recommend WordPress, but I guess it is more aimed for blogging. Drupal is a popular CMS, take a look at that.

wordpress is a ok for straight blogging, but is horrible as a portfolio cms.

if you are a new user, drupal is very confusing for installationand customization, especially with its "unique" modules and such.

your best bet is Symphony or Textpattern for a true portfolio cms.

Yup, in fact I'm testing Drupal right now. What irks me, though, is that let's say I want a main link for my design portfolio. I have to link it to a "page" (in Drupal terminology). And since that link only links to one page, I have to consolidate everything into one page. What I'd have preferred, was something like a blog, except: 1) It's arranged in a chronological order (not very intuitive for design portfolios) and 2) It seems that I can only have one blog module at a time. =(
