iPod + CHKDSK

On boot up my iPod was connected to my laptop, and while i went away waiting for it to boot, XP decided to run Scan Disk / Disk Check / CHKDSK or whatever it's called on my iPod. Having had this happen, and XP declare my iPod "fixed", my iPod is now no longer recognised as being formatted and hence the data is no longer accesible. It's extremely frustrating that this should have happened because i frequently use the iPod to synchronise my work between many different computers, so i'd be very grateful for any help. (Would trying to connect the iPod in a Linux environment of some kind help?)

Try using the iPod updater's restore function.

or use a third party program to grab the files off the ipod- they should still be there.

if you allow hidden files to be shown you should see a bunch of folders and music files in each of them, although they won't be named appropiately..

assuming windows didn't format your ipod- just get a third party program to take them off.

No... XP does what you tell it to do... more or less.

The only way XP would have seen this drive during bootup is if you enabled boot from USB device in the bios.

Obviously it's not bootable, but it is seen as a USB drive, so XP will check it on bootup.

The laptop itself has just been recently "restored" so it's all on factory settings...

or use a third party program to grab the files off the ipod- they should still be there.

I'll try it but i'm doubtful that a third party program will read it when neither iTunes or windows will. Thanks nonetheless.

4G black and white screen.

Try using the iPod updater's restore function.

Hadn't thought about that... i'll give it a go.

EDIT: On second thoughts, restoring erases all data anyway which is just what i don't want. Though maybe an update will work.

I think they're just plain FAT...

If i restore the iPod, hopefully the formatting is weak enough so that i can still recover the data? Will this be reliable? It's probably my best shot.

iPods setup for use with a PC are formatted as FAT32.

FAT partitions are limited to 2GB max.

The program should be non-destructive and works with FAT/32? File systems, I would give it a shot as I've been suprised at how many times it has given me back lost data. Also, it doesn't require installation and can be run off a thumbdrive so, should be no risk to your system. Goodluck.

Thanks for the help guys but i think the hard disk inside is terminally buggered, it won't even let me format it and there's definitely an error because capacity is reading over 80GB!! I think a new iPod is in order. White, 30GB. I'm not too disappointed after 2 long years of abuse, the battery is awful anyway, luckily i haven't lost too much work, most of it is backed up.
